By There’s a lot of big movies and sequels coming out this year that it is hard to choose a set few to feature, but you’ll definitely be in for a treat! You’ll fall in love with new movies and go down memory lane with some, you might even find a new favourite nestled in our list.
Of course, there are some movies that are yet to be announced this year, so we’re just placing in the ones that are confirmed to be released for now. Without further ado, here are some movies that you should definitely add to your 2022 watch list!
Scream (January 14th)
A reboot of one of our favourite thriller franchises is due, and this time it’s Scream! The movie is bringing back old characters while assimilating new characters for a modern feel. Fans of the franchise will feel nostalgic, and new fans will not be lost trying to figure out past events.
From the trailer itself, Scream is racking up to be a must-watch for thriller fans everywhere. Ghostface is on another killing spree, causing havoc and terror in the town once more.
Death On The Nile (February 11th)
We’ve seen Hercule Poirot in action in the events of ‘Murder on The Orient Express’ and this time he’s made his way to Egypt. Based on the infamous Agatha Christie’s book of the same name, this is another murder mystery we’ll all be excited to solve.
As with the previous movie, this one features another star-studded cast in the most detailed setting, which is evident from its trailer. Death on The Nile brings romance, jealousy and murder into one thrilling crescendo that you will be excited to uncover.
The Batman (March 4th)
When it was announced that Robert Pattinson was to play Batman in this upcoming movie, there was an uproar that split the audience in two. Some people were intrigued, others were dismayed. Either way, from the looks of the trailer, the movie looks to be on the promising side.
It is without a doubt that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will be on the darker side, evident through the dark tones and gritty lighting that seems to plague the entire trailer. He’ll be joined by Catwoman and The Riddler in this darkly explosive movie. This version of Batman seems to hold promise as one that would be comically accurate, so we’re interested to see how everything plays out.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore (April 15th)
Following the events of the previous movies, this time the spotlight will be on Newt as he and his friends take down Grindelwald hell-bent on going to war with humans. Of course, this time we see a new face as Grindelwald – Mads Mikkelsen, as the role was taken away from Johnny Depp due to controversies. Sad.
It looks like we’ll get to see more beasts and the backstories of Dumbledore as the movie progresses, which is a treat for Harry Potter fans everywhere. We’ll also be back in Hogwarts! The added Hedwig’s Theme song in the background really adds to the nostalgia.
Marry Me (February 11)
We all need a little romance and drama in our lives, right? So here you go! This rom-com stars JLo, Owen Wilson and Maluma, which is an interesting and odd combination of people. However, the trailer definitely won over the hearts of rom-com lovers everywhere. It’s like a throwback to the 2000s era romcoms that we all adore.
Plus, the storyline is improbable and absurd, which always makes for a good romcom. Even if you know how the story will end, you’re still sticking around to witness it happening. Good thing this movie will be released close to Valentine’s Day, it’s a great movie to watch on a date!
Jurassic World Dominion (June 10th)
Following the events of the last Jurassic World movie, dinosaurs are now set free to roam the world, and humans are not prepared for what’s to come. Jurassic World Dominion brings back some of the beloved characters from the Jurassic Park series: Alan, Ellie and Ian.
They’ll come together with the characters from Jurassic World to put a stop to the madness once and for all. An interesting culmination of events that we are stoked to see! The beautiful prologue even showcases some really realistic dinosaur CGI and animation, so that’s definitely something to look forward to.
Lightyear (June 17th)
Nobody really saw this coming, and perhaps the most shocking part about Lightyear is the fact that Buzz Lightyear has hair! The movie is a fictional story about a fictional action figure, so your head might get dizzy if you think about it for too long. Anyways, it’s a cute animation suitable for those family movie nights.
Inspire your little ones and perhaps even yourself as you witness Buzz attempt to reach his dreams as a space ranger. Bonus for the adults: Buzz is voiced by Chris Evans, Captain America himself, which is a fitting role. To infinity and beyond!
Thor: Love And Thunder (July 8th)
With Taika Waititi back at the helm of this latest Thor movie, this sensation might trump Thor: Ragnarok which is arguably a masterpiece of fun and character development. Personally, Taika’s version of Thor has always been my favourite so I’m looking forward to watching this!
Apparently this time, Jane Foster will be taking the responsibilities of Mjolnir and putting on some armor as well. Just like its title suggests, there will be love and there will be thunder, so brace yourselves for some laughs and some action.
Nope (July 22nd)
Jordan Peele has continuously brought us amazing movies – Get Out, Us, Candyman… so we’re sure to be enthralled in whatever Nope is said to bring. With a movie that stars Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun and Keke Palmer, this is going to be another interestingly twisted horror movie. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
Even their movie poster is ominous and mysterious, truly we won’t know what to expect until the trailer is released. But if we were to guess, it’s something apocalyptic or aliens based (and we could be totally wrong). What we do know is that it will confuse you, scare you and you’ll probably be thinking about it for days after.
Avatar 2 (December 16th)
Perhaps one of the most anticipated movies out there, Avatar 2 has been in the making for about 13 years now. It somehow feels surreal that we’ll get to see it at the end of this year! Fingers crossed it doesn’t get pushed back, but this is an experience you won’t want to miss.
You’ll be transported back to the world of Pandora as Jake and Ney’tiri have now formed a family of their own. In order to stay safe, they need to explore Pandora and fight the new threats that threaten their safety. All this with the inevitability of being at war with humans filling the air.

The Black Phone (April 21st)
A supernatural horror story set in the 1970s based on a short story. Five children go missing and Finney Shaw gets kidnapped by a serial child killer. He’s trapped in a soundproof basement and starts receiving calls through a broken phone of the killer’s previous victims.
In order to get out alive, he needs to piece together all the information the victims have to give him. On the outside, his friend has been having realistic dreams of his whereabouts and is on her own journey to find him. She’s also lead by the ghosts of the previous victims in her search. Spooky, but intriguing.
Turning Red (March 11th)
On a lighter and cuter note, we have Turning Red! Pixar and Disney’s latest venture together shines the spotlight on a 13-year-old girl that turns into a giant red panda when her emotions get out of control. Sort of like a metaphor for all teenagers at that age, honestly.
Turning Red brings all that loud, explosive energy associated with all girls at that age in the 2000s with some added life lessons (as with all Disney-Pixar films). It’s a heartwarming and adorable film to watch with the family on movie night for sure!
Morbius (April 1st)
Following the success of Venom, more supervillain movies are about to be made! As such, Morbius is going to be a strong contender in that area, and we’re excited to see it in cinemas. A character that suffers from a rare blood disease goes on a search for a cure but ends up with some form of vampire powers.
Calling him a vampire is an embellished statement, he has all the powers of a bat which makes him a powerful being with an uncontrollable lust for blood. Morbius explores the fine line between becoming a villain or a hero to the world and this is a question we would all like to know the answer to.
The Northman (April 22nd)
Looking for something weird, bloody and oddly niche to wrap your head around? Look no further! The Northman by Robert Eggers – the same director that brought us The Witch and The Lighthouse is here. This time, we take a closer look at a Viking prince on a revenge quest to avenge his father. The setting? A remote Icelandic village in the 10th century.
We’ll get to see Willem Dafoe in action again, alongside Alexander Skarsgard as a Viking prince. Everything seems to fit so well with each other in this movie, that it brings out a little intrigue in what Eggers has in store for his audience this time. Arthouse meets action? Interesting.
Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (May 6th)
We get to see another side of Doctor Strange and this time he’s joined by another sorcerer: Wanda Maximoff. The Multiverse of Madness follows the aftermath of the first season of Loki and the ending of Spiderman: No Way Home.
Doctor Strange is once again continuing with his research on the Time Stone and trying to understand the multiverse. He’ll even come face to face with an evil version of himself, which is a treat for all of us to witness. Faced with all sorts of challenges in his way, it’s a miracle if he comes out on the good side after all this.
The Outfit (February 25th)
A somewhat prestigious tailor from Saville Row relocates to Chicago and finds himself with a list of gangsters as his clientele. This crime drama drags him into the lives of the various mobsters of Chicago, whether he wants to be involved or not.
Soon enough he is entangled in an operation that is far beyond his control and doing things that he never thought he would have to do. The Outfit is one of those intense crime dramas that you won’t want to miss out on that takes place in an unassumingly elegant tailor shop. It looks to be a one location type of movie, so it would be interesting to see how the movie plays out.
The Flash (November 4th)
Ever since we’ve got a glimpse of Ezra Miller’s version of the Flash in the Justice League movie, fans have been clamouring for him to get his own standalone feature. The DCEU listened, and here we are. The Flash will be travelling back in time to prevent a murder from happening, but as usual, messing with time will have its consequences.
In the trailer, we’ve got a glimpse of Batman – but no ordinary Batman, it’s Michael Keaton’s Batman! This just fuels the hype to see him back in action again and it would be a golden moment to see how Barry would interact with this version of Batman alongside the multiple variations of himself.
Everything Everywhere All At Once (March 25th)
An old Asian lady getting thrown into an action-adventure of a lifetime is not something anyone would expect to come across, but that’s the norm that Everything Everywhere All At Once is trying to break. Michelle Yeoh creates her own multiverse as she goes on a journey to save the world by travelling through multiple universes.
Who says that the multiverse is exclusive to the comic book world, right? This movie is as world-breaking as the Matrix and is action-filled as a Marvel movie – just make it Asian. It’s also filled with comedy and martial art scenes that will leave your jaw hanging open in awe. Don’t miss it!
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (November 11th)
In a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, Black Panther is a must-watch this year. It will be interesting to see how the franchise will continue without him, and we’re prepared for a bittersweet ending. The plot is still hush-hush, we get that Marvel doesn’t want to spoil anything for what’s about to be a bestselling blockbuster hit.
But from what we can speculate, we’ll finally see Wakanda revealing itself to the world and all the challenges T’Challa will face in protecting his country. All this while keeping his nemesis at bay. Perhaps, his sister and family will proceed to take over his reign when he is gone.
Ambulance (February 18th)
Itching for an absurd Michael Bay action movie? Well, you’re getting it! This time, Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul Mateen II take centre stage as foster siblings and partners in crime. The two are involved in a heist gone wrong which led them to steal an ambulance with some hostages in tow.
You’ll get your dose of explosions, car chases, helicopters, guns and a whole lot of shooting in this one. It’s an adrenaline-pumping movie as the two keeps a nurse and a dying cop hostage in the back of an ambulance while trying to get away and ensuring the cop stays alive. Yahya plays an ex-soldier in this one, Jake is the psychotic mastermind.
