By Marvel Studios boss Kevin Fiege has confirmed the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to get its first transgender superhero in its upcoming Phase 4 following The Eternals, which will feature the comic book movie series’ first gay character.
Kevin Feige, speaking during a Q&A session at the New York Film Academy, has confirmed the Marvel Cinematic Universe is to get its first transgender superhero.
The Eternals, which arrives in 2020 as part of Marvel’s Phase 4, will feature the comic book movie series’ first gay character which will be followed “very soon” by “trans characters” in a movie, says Fiege, that “we’re shooting right now”.
A fan asked during the question and answer discussion whether there were any plans for more LGBT characters from Marvel. Fiege replied: “Yes, absolutely. Yes.” Rumours began circling in July last year when Geeks WorldWide reported that the studio was seeking a trans woman for a 2020 project.
The Eternals, which stars an all-star ensemble including Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Gemma Chan and Kit Harington, will also feature Marvel’s first deaf superhero. And in another of its upcoming films – Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – we will see the studio’s first Asian-American superhero.
Fiege said: “You look at the success of Captain Marvel and Black Panther. We want the movies to reflect the audience and we want every member of our global audience to see themselves reflected on the screen.”
Arriving in cinemas in November 2020, The Eternals will precede Thor: Love and Thunder (scheduled for Marvel’s 2021 slate) which will see Tessa Thompson’s bisexual Valkyrie, now the King of New Asgard, seeking her queen.
