By Gaspar Noé’s Climax, which won the Art Cinema award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, sees the writer-director as provocative as ever.
Gaspar Noé’s dance-music-horror will enjoy its UK premiere at Arrow Home Video’s Frightfest on August 27 before arriving in cinemas from September 21.
The film which turned heads at this year’s Cannes will have the chance to “shock and awe” a new audience when it gets its UK-wide theatrical release.
Starring Sofia Boutella, Kiddy Smile and Romain Guillermic, the film which critic Robbie Collin called “darkly funny” and “wildly sexy” sees a dance troupe celebrating at an after-party following a successful rehearsal. But it soon becomes apparent the drinks have been spiked, resulting in a dizzying, orgiastic frenzy.
Made with a cast of unknowns, Climax brings together a cast of non-actors and professional dancers – some scouted from the underground Paris ballroom scene as well as Youtube dance videos – with Sofia Boutella (Hotel Artemis, The Mummy) taking the lead delivering a career-defining performance while also choreographing the film’s dance sequences.
Premiering to the highest acclaim of Noé’s career, the film introduces us to each dancer via straight-to-camera audition tapes. An eclectic group of gay, straight, black, lesbian, multi-national twenty-somethings, the group captivates individually before seamlessly blending into a hypnotic collective as witnessed in a dazzling dance number.
What follows is the hallucinogenic experience of a bad trip from psychedelic drugs through distinctive eye of director and the electrifying cinematography of Noé’s regular collaborator, Benôit Debie.
Climax is in UK cinemas from September 21.
