By The casts of the Ghostbusters reboot and Star Wars: The Force Awakens were out ‘talking up’ and ‘showing off’ their shiny new cinematic achievements in July. But which do you prefer: familiar, nostalgic and chronological or unfamiliar, reinterpreted and rebooted?
As a fan of both the Star Wars and Ghostbusters franchises (albeit the latter being a much smaller affair in comparison), it’s exciting to see each getting a new adventure. But there’s apprehension too. Will the familiar cast of Star Wars – those iconic stars and their equally memorable characters – make us older fans feel like teenagers again or collapse under the inevitable ailments of old age and glories long gone? Similarly, will the all-female line-up in the previously all-male Ghostbusters remind us how good the original movie is while we endure its poor, revamped imitation or reveal itself to be a breath of fresh air and the beginning of a new set of Ghost-bustin’ cinematic stories? Time will tell.
