Netflix has released the first images of Bradley Cooper’s in-production feature film Maestro in which he plays composer Leonard Bernstein. Aged by makeup to look like the musical maverick later in life, Cooper looks almost unrecognisable.
Scott Stuber, the head of global films at Netflix, said, “We’ve done a lot of work on the makeup. We’ve done a lot of work on the voice. I’m excited to see someone so deeply focused on creating a story that means so much to him.”
The film will see both a more familiar-looking Cooper as the younger Bernstein and an older version of the man in this biopic from the actor who also co-writes and directs. Carey Mulligan plays Bernstein’s wife Felicia Montealegre with the cast also including Jeremy Strong, Matt Bomer and Stranger Things star Maya Hawke.

Variety said Maestro will be released next year. It’ll be Cooper’s first film as director since his Oscar-winning A Star is Born with Lady Gaga. Legendary directors Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are attached to the project as producers. Joker director Todd Phillips is also involved.
The biopic will follow Bernstein, who is credited as the first American-born conductor to lead a major American symphony orchestra, over the span of 30 years, taking us through his various career highs such as his work on West Side Story and On The Waterfront and his marriage to Chilean-born actress Felicia Montealegre.

The project had been in development at Paramount Pictures, with Martin Scorsese intending to direct the film. He decided to step down and focus on The Irishman instead allowing Cooper to take over. Spielberg is one of the film’s producers having also considered directing the film. Production began in May 2022.
