Robert Redford – having announced his retirement from acting – has decided to put his wine country estate up for sale. Top 10 Films takes a look inside the Napa getaway of the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid star.
Robert Redford is stepping away from acting. Now in his 80s, the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid star is hanging up his boots after The Old Man & The Gun. His decision to step away from the on-screen limelight coincides with him putting his Napa Valley estate up for sale, priced at $7.5 million.
A relaxing retreat for Redford and his wife, the artist Sibylle Szaggars, their Napa home-from-home has been in their possession for 14 years but they have now decided to be closer to family in the Bay Area. The actor and his wife have combined their time between their permanent home in Utah, near his Sundance Institute and not far from where he shot many of Jeremiah Johnson’s scenes, and Napa Valley where they are known to indulge in their various hobbies and entertain friends and family.
Now accepting offers having been valued at $7.5 million, the home, named Danza del Sol, is perched on a knoll offering complete privacy amongst its 10 acres of woodland and walking trails. Oozing charm, the main house is accompanied by a 90-square-foot artist studio/guest house and two sizeable garages (one of which houses a large workshop and exercise studio). Its modest three bedrooms and four bathrooms sit inside a 5,200-square-foot main house encompassing a large great room, den, library-office, sunny white kitchen and formal dining room.
Glorious wood-burning fireplaces can be found throughout while the quaint studio/guest house has been opened out to allow as much natural light to enter through a wall of French doors. Outside you’ll find a pool, spa and outdoor seating/dining with wonderful views.
Redford’s final film, The Old Man and The Gun alongside Sissy Spacek and Casey Affleck in which he plays a real-life career criminal and escape artist, marks the end of a superstar career that saw cinematic touchstones, commercial smash hits, and Academy Award winners make him one of Hollywood’s most compelling icons.
All The President’s Men, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Three Days of the Condor, Jeremiah Johnson, Ordinary People, Out of Africa, The Way We Were and Brubaker are just a few of the great movies Robert Redford has starred in.
It wasn’t film where he started his career, however. He migrated from TV to the stage before getting the chance to bless the silver screen. That also led to some striking efforts as both director and producer while his commitment to developing new talent has mushroomed from his decision to open the Sundance Institute. Non-profit organisations such as the Sundance Film Festival, the Sundance cable channel, Sundance catalog and others as outlets have given a stage to new filmmakers and artists.
Fittingly, alongside the film-related awards he has won, he has received the Kennedy Center Honors and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
