Whether you’re making use of free movie streaming platforms or popular providers like Amazon Prime and Netflix, there’s so much choice and seemingly so little time. And with Amazon Prime and Netflix offering not only an abundance of great TV and film to watch, but producing some of their own brilliant original content, sometimes we need a little help sifting the good from the bad. Here we check out five movies currently streaming on one of these platforms
Hereditary (2018) – On Amazon Prime Video
Ari Aster’s feature film debut possesses a craftsmanship that elevates its effectiveness as a slow-burning, atmospheric horror movie. Toni Collette is Annie Graham, a mother who, after a death in the family, starts to experience strange occurrences that may be related to her own mother’s mysterious past. Aster’s strength is the way he builds towards tragedy, utilising Pawel Pogorzelski’s wonderful cinematography to supplement the foreboding otherness of the events in Hereditary that befall Annie and her family.
Drive (2011) – On Amazon Prime Video
Drive is a thoroughly fascinating piece of cinema. As a great anti-hero story, we have a protagonist whose addiction to perfection forces him to move above and below the law rendering him an unknown, a social outcast. The enigma of the driver is an ambiguous hook the film entertains to its fullest. Drive is essentially for those that like films to pack a punch both in their graphic violence and their characters. Refn’s pacing is hardly akin to the driver’s pedal-to-the-metal abilities with a car, but like the unflustered nature of the stuntman’s breakneck speed there’s a precise perfection to the unravelling of a thoroughly captivating story.
Tyrannosaur (2011) – On Amazon Prime Video
If Tyrannosaur was made by a veteran director with twenty films on his or her curriculum vitae, the sheer dynamism and skill displayed in dramatic construction, character and approach would come as little surprise. That the film is Paddy Considine’s first as writer/director makes the brilliance of this film even more astonishing. The film chronicles the angry, vengeful, Joseph, (Peter Mullan) as he attempts to turn a corner and find some sort of value in life.
Fаrgо (1996) – On Netflix

MсDоrmаnd рісkѕ up whаt mіght hаvе bееn a саrісаturе – Mаrgе Gundеrѕоn, thе vеrу рrеgnаnt Mіnnеѕоtа роlісе сhіеf wіth a сhееrful Mіdwеѕtеrn disposition – and turns hеr іntо оnе оf thе wаrmеѕt сhаrасtеrѕ іn Cоеn’ѕ еntіrе саnоn. Shе сlеvеrlу dоеѕ nоt trаnѕmіt juѕt thе ѕеnѕе оf Mіnnеѕоtа but the nuances of ѕhаrр іnvеѕtіgаtіvе ѕkіllѕ аnd іnѕtіnсtѕ that define a very humаn, very real character.
Sоmе Lіkе It Hоt (1959) – On Netflix
Twо jаzz muѕісіаnѕ (Jасk Lеmmоn аnd Tony Curtіѕ) diѕguіѕе thеmѕеlvеѕ іn drаg tо еѕсаре ѕоmе gаngѕtеrѕ, but оnе fаllѕ іn lоvе wіth a ѕеduсtіvе ѕіngеr (Mаrіlуn Mоnrое іn оnе оf hіѕ bеѕt реrfоrmаnсеѕ), whіlе thе оthеr becomes thе оbjесt оf dеѕіrе оf a mіllіоnаіrе. Both Curtis and Lemmon are in fine form here, whilst Monroe completely holds her own and is as sexy as ever. The second collaboration between Monroe and Wilder, Some Like It Hot can truly be considered as one of the greatest timeless comedies.
