After collaborating on the brilliant Sideways in 2004, director Alexander Payne and actor Paul Giamatti have reteamed for The Holdovers in which Giamatti plays a heavily disliked teacher who is put in charge of students unable to go home at Christmas due to having no family.
Written by David Hemingson, The Holdovers, which also features newcomer Dominic Sessa in the role of rebellious student Angus, sees the curmudgeonly teacher forming unlikely bonds with the young troublemaker and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).
While Payne isn’t on writing duties this time around, he conceived of the film after watching a French film from the 1930s and hired talented TV writer and producer David Hemingson to pen the script. Originally written as a TV pilot, Hemingson, whose credits include Black-ish, American Dad, and How I Met Your Mother, adapted it into a feature-length film.
It is set for release in the US on October 27 but unfortunately UK audiences won’t get to see the film until after Christmas with The Holdovers set to debut in cinemas on January 19, 2024.
