Charlotte Wells’ critically acclaimed, multi award winning Aftersun will make its debut on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK this February. The film, which was named one of the best of 2022 by the National Board of Review and Sight and Sound, was a big favourite at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and has continued to ride a wave of praise.
Most recently the recipient of two awards at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards where Wells picked up Breakthrough British/Irish Filmmaker and young actor Frankie Corio took home Young British/Irish Performer, Aftersun will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of MUBI on February 20.
The film sees 11-year-old Sophie (Corio) treasuring rare time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (Paul Mescal) at a fading vacation resort. Twenty years later, Sophie’s tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship. It juxtaposes a hopeful coming-of-age story with a poignant, intimate family portrait that leaves an indelible impression.
Aftersun has also enjoyed nominations in four BAFTA Awards categories including Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut by a British Writer (Wells), Leading Actor (Mescal) and Casting (Lucy Pardee). Paul Mescal’s performance is also nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role at this year’s 95th Academy Awards.
Writer and director Wells is a graduate of NYU where she made three short films as a student. She has been featured in Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 Faces of Independent Film” and was also a Fellow at the 2020 Sundance Institute Screenwriters and Directors Labs.
Shubhra Gupta said it perfectly in her review when she wrote: “Aftersun is a film about belonging, aching loss, and making memories, and you will find yourself taking deep dives into personal pools of these elements, looking for your share of the sun.”
