Dubai Opera is regarded as the central recreational area of the Opera District in Downtown Dubai. Since its opening in 2016, almost every special concert and show is organised here. A 2,000-seat, multi-format, performing arts centre, it was developed by Emaar Properties to host various performances and events. Following its opening it hosted Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers opera as well as the celebrated tenor José Carreras.
“The iconic dhow-shaped building of Dubai Opera is a masterpiece of contemporary design and a stylish tribute to Dubai’s maritime history,” notes the website. Designed by Atkins and lead architect Janus Rostock, the building has the ability to transform into different modes including, of course, “theatre mode”.
In this mode, the space is suitable for large-scale drama productions, ballets, lectures, musicals, and conferences. It can seat up to 2,000 people. Says Dubai Opera: “When transformed into a concert hall, a series of towers and reflectors on stage and overhead are designed to create an acoustic shell around the orchestra, enabling a perfect acoustic environment for amazing sound quality.”
