With the competition between current and upcoming streamers raging, Netflix pushed back its shoulders and stood tall in a display of its current market domination.
Its new animated family feature film The Willoughbys, which debuted one month ago, has racked up 37.6 million views since April 22. That puts it amongst its most popular movies of all time (closing in on Triple Frontier’s 52 million views) and approaching docu-series Tiger King’s 64 million views.
The data revealed by Netflix follows its new metric of recording “1 view” when a user watches two-minutes of the film. While this may not tell the full story of how many people have actually watched The Willoughbys in its entirety, it’s a figure that is in line with similar metrics used by BBC iPlayer and YouTube.
The figures are impressive – particular for investors, which Netflix’s publicised data is designed for – and puts the film alongside some of the streamer’s most popular recent film content like Extraction and Spenser Confidential.
The Ricky Gervais-narrated film is based on Lois Lowry’s story and sees a pair of siblings (voiced by Will Forte and Alessia Cara) devise a scheme to get rid of their parents. The Willoughbys is directed by Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2’s Kris Pearn with Cory Evans from a screenplay by Mark Stanleigh.
