Robert Downey Jr. experienced quite the surreal moment upon learning about his Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Oppenheimer.
The acclaimed actor, now a three-time Academy Award nominee, candidly recounted the morning of the nominations to People magazine, revealing his initial confusion before the joyous revelation.
“I was having this nightmare that the kittens [Willow and Winifred] had taken one of my Nicorette wrappers, and I was going to get in trouble,” Downey Jr. disclosed, humorously describing the scenario that preceded the announcement. He credited his wife, producer Susan Downey, for waking him up with the good news, leading to a celebration together that day.
Oppenheimer was a rewarding experience
Reflecting on his experience filming Oppenheimer, where he portrayed former Atomic Energy Commission chairman Lewis Strauss, Downey Jr. emphasised the camaraderie shared with his co-stars, including Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, and Matt Damon. He expressed that while the nomination was thrilling, the true reward was the enriching experience of collaborating with such esteemed colleagues.
“The reward was the experience,” he stated, highlighting the profound respect and bond forged among the cast.
Blunt, a fellow nominee for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, echoed Downey Jr.’s sentiments, expressing gratitude for the close-knit bond formed during the Oppenheimer journey. “I feel like we’ve been such a little gang of this Oppenheimer ride, which seems to be forever lasting and extends beyond what any of us dreamt of,” she remarked.
Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s most Oscar-nominated film
Directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer garnered an impressive 13 Oscar nominations, making it the most nominated film of 2023.
The biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, marked Nolan’s most nominated film to date, earning nods across various categories including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
Additionally, Cillian Murphy received a nomination for Best Actor, while Hoyte van Hoytema earned recognition for Best Cinematography, among other accolades.
