It has been a pretty good time for Maria Bakalova. The Borat breakout star became an overnight sensation thanks to Sacha Baron Cohen’s hilarious exploits and was later nominated for an Oscar. Now she’s set for a key role in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.
Deadline revealed the news that Bakalova, who played Borat’s daughter in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, has joined the ensemble cast which includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Sylvester Stallone, Karen Gillan and Will Poulter with Chuk Iwuji, Daniela Melchior and Elizabeth Debicki.
Filming recently wrapped on the Marvel Universe film with director James Gunn confirming more surprise roles would surface. The first two films in the series – Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) – collectively grossed more than $1.6 billion worldwide. Vol. 3 will make its debut in cinemas Stateside on May 5, 2023. So far, very little is known about the plot of the latest adventure with Peter Quill and his gang of intergalactic criminals.

Now the Guardians of the Galaxy films can also boast the talents of Borat 2’s real star. The Bulgarian actress played Tutar. The character begins as a poorly educated and badly treated child that transforms into a confident and courageous young woman.
Given that this is a Borat film, it comes as no surprise that she had her fair share of raunchy and hilarious moments, which did create some challenges for the actress. It’s fair to say this was not a role for the faint hearted!
One of these tricky moments came before a particularly hilarious scene in the film, which had the young actress “freaking out” (and before you think it), I am not talking about the infamous and hugely controversial Rudy Giuliani scene.
Throughout the film, we see that Tutar has been convinced to fear her own body by the teachings of her home country. When she wanders into a hotel bathroom however, the mysteries of self-pleasure are about to be discovered. The revelation excited Tutar so much that she went as far as crashing a very conservative meeting of Women Republicans, to showcase her newfound knowledge by giving a speech about her experience.
The scene could not have turned out better, Bakalova however has admitted that she was anxious about this one. (Which is completely understandable.) This was primarily due to the fact it was a lengthy monologue being spoken in front of a crowd that would certainly be listening and to top off the unusual situation, Bakalova didn’t know much English at the time.

Baron Cohen certainly took Bakalova under his wing for the duration of Borat 2. The actress has revealed that he gave her performance advice that would be key in their filming adventure. He expressed advice on how to keep from breaking during scenes and showed great concern for her while she was filming the well reported scene with Rudy Giuliani. Baron Cohen made sure he wasn’t far from her while the scene was in production, just in case he needed to intervene off-script.
Bakalova gave a remarkably bold performance in Borat 2, one that not many could have undertaken with such gut and talent. Her commitment to the role can be seen throughout every scene but she went a step further than this – committing to Tutar when off-screen too. She reported that she let her body hair grow out which she personally described as a “pretty gross situation.”
The part would earn her plenty of attention from both audiences and critics while several accolades came her way including that much-coveted Oscar nomination. Her growing filmography now includes Judd Apatow’s pandemic film The Bubble and Women Do Cry, Last Call, Transgression, and The Father. She’ll next appear in Bodies Bodies Bodies, which garnered good reviews at SXSW, and The Honeymoon, which has also produced.
