Has Kevin Smith just announced Clerks III is going to happen? At a recent autograph signing sessions with Clerks star Jeff Anderson, the pair talked about a third movie while Smith revealed on Facebook that he’d begun writing a new screenplay for the new View Askewniverse film.
Kevin Smith recently took to Facebook to reveal he’d hooked up with Clerks star Jeff Anderson for an autograph signing session in which they discussed Clerks III and the potential of making a movie that “concludes a saga”. In fact, the writer-director went as far to say he’d already begin writing a brand new screenplay for the View Askewniverse entry that would see Anderson re-team with Brian O’Halloran for a third helping of Randal and Dante.
Previously, Clerks III stalled because Anderson didn’t want to be a part of it. Smith said he couldn’t therefore make it as it wouldn’t work without him. Having hooked up with the actor last weekend, it appears the pair have come to a verbal agreement. Indeed, if Anderson had reservations about the previous script (the potential stumbling block), Smith says Clerks III will now be based on an entirely new script.
It remains to be seen if the unofficial announcement that Clerks III is happening is a sign Smith is ready to walk away from the industry. He has stated previously that the third film in the saga which began his career as a filmmaker would be his retirement movie. It would be a fitting conclusion to a career that has enjoyed its heights as a result of the films – like Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back – that have appeared within his New Jersey-based View Askew world.
Smith said of the potential new film that it’ll be a “movie about how you’re never too old to completely change your life … a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future … a movie that brings us back to the beginning – a return to the cradle of civilization in the great state of New Jersey … a movie that concludes a saga.”
