Ben Wheatley, director of one of 2018’s best British films (Happy New Year, Colin Burstead), is set to helm the next Tomb Raider says Deadline.
British writer-director Ben Wheatley, whose eclectic work includes offbeat action-comedy Free Fire and twisty kitchen-sink horror Kill List, will direct the next Tomb Raider. Reports suggest Alicia Vikander (who first wowed us in Ex Machina) will reprise her role as Lara Croft with the film set for release in the United States on March 19, 2021.
MGM’s sequel to Tomb Raider will see the treasure-jumping adventurer’s journey scripted by Wheatley’s frequent collaborator Amy Jump who also worked with him on the excellent Sightseers and High Rise. The duo will begin pre-production on the film after Wheatley completes his reinterpretation of Hitchcock’s Rebecca.
Tomb Raider 2, which is set to be the British director’s biggest commercial film to date, sees Wheatley replace the franchise’s previous director Roar Uthaug.
