The world of The Matrix is returning to our screens with a fourth chapter officially confirmed.
Keanu Reeves is set to return, alongside creator of the franchise Lana Wachowski (who, alongside sister Lilly, made the first three movies) set to return as director. Original cast member Carrie-Anne Moss will also be returning.
Lana has expressed: “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
The script has been co-written by Wachowski alongside the sci-fi novelists Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.
2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the original Matrix, a unique sci-fi that explored the story of hacker Neo and his discovery that the world was a simulated reality.
The Matrix was a surprise hit that made in excess of $460 million worldwide and launched two successful sequels – The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.
In total the franchise has now made over $1.6 billion.
Excitement and rumours about a new film have been circulating since 2017, with Michael B Jordan then expected to be the lead role.
Lilly Wachowski has stated to Slash Film: “I like it when stories go out into the world and then come back to you in different ways. I mean, that’s what storytelling is all about. I’m part of a bigger thing. I don’t have any ownership over stuff like that, so whatever story anybody wants to tell, I can’t wait to hear. I hope it’s better than the original.”
The Wachowskis have had a number of commercial disappointments including Speed Racer, Jupiter Ascending and Cloud Atlas since the original trilogy, and their Netflix show Sense8 was cancelled after just two seasons.
Reeves has scored a global hit this summer with John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, making over $320 million worldwide. He is next making an appearance in the long-awaited Bill and Ted sequel.
Sources have told Variety that the new Matrix film will start production in 2020 and is of course expected to be a momentous hit amongst fans of the franchise.
