Sarah Jessica Parker has added her voice to the #MeToo campaign by reporting countless cases of on-set harassment including one involving a “big movie star”.
The #MeToo campaign has encouraged another Hollywood star to reveal her own battles with sexually aggressive men within the industry. Sarah Jessica Parker, star of Sex and the City, says there have been countless incidences of men behaving inappropriately in her presence including a very well known star.
Interviewed on the NPR show Fresh Air, Parker said: “It really wasn’t … until about six or eight months ago that I started recognising countless experiences of men behaving poorly, inappropriately … I don’t know why I either wasn’t courageous or more destroyed by some of the things that I was privy to, that I was on the receiving end of.”
The events of inappropriate behaviour Parker refers to have allegedly occurred on films and TV shows she’s done across her career. In one instance, she mentions a “big movie star” was the culprit. This was only resolved after threatening to leave the set.
However, the man made life difficult for her. Apparently, he said to “them”, “‘If this continues, I have sent her a ticket, a one-way ticket out of this city’ – where I was shooting – ‘and she will not be returning.’”
Parker says it is a male-dominated industry. “No matter how evolved or how modern I thought I was … I didn’t feel as powerful as the man who was behaving inappropriately … I had every right to say, ‘This is inappropriate.’ I could have felt safe in going to a superior.”
