Daniel Craig reportedly was injured after falling on the set in Jamaica and production has been suspended so the actor could be flown to the U.S. for X-rays and treatment as needed, according to British newspaper The Sun.
The newspaper quoted an unnamed source that Craig was sprinting when “he slipped and fell quite awkwardly. … He was in quite a lot of pain and was complaining about his ankle.”
It’s long been rumored that “Bond 25” is Craig’s last time to play 007, even telling TV show “Entertainment Tonight” that he thinks he’s done enough. “People are going to sick of the sight of me and someone else should have a go.”
SBR’s top sportsbooks, including BetOnline, have had an active list of potential Bond replacements which includes Tom Hiddleston, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy and Idris Elba.
Elba is the choice if ex-Bond girl Halle Berry had her way.
During a recent appearance on NBC’s “Today” show, People magazine reports, the actress who appeared opposite Pierce Brosnan in “Die Another Day,” who would be a the best person to follow Craig.
Her first response — “A woman! … No, just kidding. Queen Latifah!”
She may have been joking but there are several women listed on sportsbooks as the possible new Bond, such as Emily Blunt, Gillian Anderson and Grace Jones.
Berry did offer up more serious response — “Who should take it? I’d want to see Hugh Jackman or Idris Elba – I’d go for him,” Berry said of Elba.
Frankly, many people have expressed wanting Elba in the role, while he has said he isn’t that interested. In March he told the Daily Mail, ““Bond is one of the biggest franchises in the world, and for that reason, whoever ends up playing it, lives it. You’re that character and known as that character for many, many years. I’m creating characters now that can still live alongside Idris. Not ones that take over me and solely define me.”
Another actor who has expressed interest in the role and had been considered a longshot is “Outlander” star Sam Heughan. In an interview with The Scottish Sun, Heughan jokingly said he’d take the role if he could wear a kilt. His “Outlander” character Jamie Fraser is known for his kilt wearing.
When asked if Bond is a character he’d “like to sink his teeth into,” the popular romantic lead said “If Bond would wear a kilt, I think he probably would – he does have a lot of Scottish connections.”
One actor who has long been a sportsbook frontunner is James Norton, known for his roles in British series “Happy Valley,” “Grantchester,” “War & Peace” and “McMafia.”
When asked about the possibilities, he gave Gentleman’s Journal a most modest reply: “Bond’s such an icon, and he means so much to so many people, so there’s an inevitable amount of speculation and guessing and betting. But that’s as much as it is — speculation. Very flattering, very humbling speculation.”
The magazine goes on to listed reasons why Norton should be the pick:
- He’s shown he can play complex, human characters with a violent streak
- He loves the globetrotting lifestyle
- He has already proven he has the style and personality
- Norton expresses Bond’s suaveness coupled with Craig’s rough charisma
Case made? Well there is someone coming on strong who could snap up the role – Richard Madden.
The star of the BBC and Netflix’s “Bodyguard,” is both shaking and stirring up the list of frontrunners for the job as Bond – with odds that make him look like a shoo-in.
Madden however isn’t ready to take the speculation seriously.
“It’s all noise,” he told Elle magazine. “… There will be another British TV show with another young male actor and then he’ll be the next James Bond for the following two months.”
But for now, we still have Craig as Bond, though he too may be shaken and a bit stirred. There’s still time to get in on the action and for new possible 007s to reveal themselves. “Bond 25” is tentatively scheduled to be released in April 2020.
