Less than a week until the most anticipated film release in recent history – Avengers: Endgame. It’s the moment Marvel fans find out exactly how the Infinity Saga ends. Should we be excited? Hell, yes! Here’s 10 rumours and theories about what we might see…
The marketing has been perfectly ambiguous, enhancing anticipation and shrouding the whole film and plot in a welcome mystery. How will the Avengers react to the decimation caused by Thanos’ snap?
In preparation for this movie event I have put together a top 10 list of reasons to be excited for Avengers: Endgame by exploring what little we know.
10. The unknown character
Katherine Langford – from Netflix hit 13 Reasons Why – has been cast in Avengers: Endgame but we don’t know what character she’s playing. Given the rumours of time travel in the movie, theories about her have included an older Cassie Lang, daughter of Scott, or even the grown daughter of Tony Stark and Pepper Potts.
9. The Th-anus Theory
Probably the best rumour is that Ant-Man will shrink himself, launch himself up Thanos’ back end and re-enlarge in horrendously gory fashion. Can you imagine?
8. It’s a big and LONG film
Avengers: Endgame is the longest film in the MCU by a considerable margin. Its official run-time clocks in at 3 hours and 2 minutes – 20 minutes longer than Infinity War, which previously held the record. Plan your toilet breaks tactically.
7. A 10-year, 22 film journey
The culmination 22 films, going right back to 2008’s Iron Man. All those characters, all those plot threads, all those infinity stones, have been leading to this – and the marketing really played on this with the latest trailer using clips from previous films with a lovely emotion Instagram filter.
6. Ant-Man and Hawkeye are back
While both were referenced as living under house arrest following Civil War, both Clint “Hawkeye” Barton and Scott “Ant-Man” Lang are back in the fray for Avengers: Endgame. We see Haweye in the Endgame trailer wearing a ninja-inspired Ronin costume. As for Scott he was conveniently in the Quantum Realm when the snap occurred, so he is ready to Avenge.
5. Time travel and the quantum realm
Rumours are rife that Avengers: Endgame will include use of the Quantum Realm seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp. The trailers suggest the team are seen here in Quantum Realm suits and this will involve some time travel to undo the decimation? Avengers: Endgame directors, the Russo brothers, have revealed some shots in the trailers aren’t actually used in the film – is this a playful way for them to throw off conspiracy theorists?
4. Captain Marvel becomes an Avenger
Captain Marvel had a mid-credits scene which saw Steve Rogers and Black Widow at Avengers HQ, standing by the intergalactic pager that Nick Fury activated in the Infinity War credits and Carol Danvers appears behind them. It would be another welcome female member to the Avengers and from the brief clips available from the trailers – Thor is a big fan!
3. Is this “endgame” for Iron Man?
Could this be the last adventure for the man who launched the MCU in 2008, will Tony Stark bow out with one final quip? Worries for Tony Stark’s future were fuelled by Gwyneth Paltrow revealing that Avengers: Endgame is her final Marvel movie. Is that because Iron Man is no more, and Pepper Potts is bowing out with him? Will Tony finally be reunited with Steve Rodgers and hug it out after their little “civil war”?
2. Will Captain America lose more than just his beard?
There is plenty of speculation around who’ll be left standing by the end of the film. Not only has Cap had a shave and put his angry face on after the events on Infinity War, but will he trade his life to stop Thanos. Chris Evans shared a Tweet after wrapping on Avengers: Endgame effectively saying farewell to his time playing Captain America.
“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honour. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”
If Steve Rodgers does not survive Avengers: Endgame, I will not be able to hold back the tears.
Anthony and Joe Russo have shared a letter asking fans not to ruin the big surprises for others. Last time it was #ThanosDemandsYourSilence. This time, it’s #DontSpoilTheEndgame. A very welcome plea to maintain the surprise and suspense for every viewer.
