Clint Eastwood has set his sights on directing another true story in the form of The Ballad of Richard Jewell. The film will tell of Jewell’s heroism after discovering a bomb at the 1996 summer Olympics in Atlanta.
Clint Eastwood wants to tell another “all American” hero story with The Ballad of Richard Jewell. From a screenplay by Billy Ray, who wrote Captain Phillips, the film will tell the true story of security guard, Jewell, who found a suspicious backpack during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and helped to clear bystanders before the bomb detonated.
The story took a strange turn when law enforcement began to investigate Jewell as a possible culprit. It became a national scandal and Jewell had gone from hero to villain. He was later cleared but not after his life had become a daily headline for weeks.
Jonah Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio were originally attached to star in the film but Eastwood is understood to be looking for new leads.
