Principal photography on Academy Award winner Charlie Kaufman’s film adaptation of the internationally best-selling novel I’m Thinking of Ending Things has begun. To be streamed on Netflix, it is based on Iain Reid’s NPR Best Book of the Year and will star Jesse Plemons, Jessie Buckley, Toni Collette and David Thewlis.
The debut novel of author Reid, I’m Thinking of Ending Things is said to examine the fragility of the psyche and the limitations of solitude. He will serve as co-producer alongside Kaufman’s regular collaborator Anthony Bregman (who produced some of the writer-director’s previous work such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Synecdoche, New York). Kaufman will sit in the director’s chair.
Faithful to Reid’s award-winning book, which is currently published in 17 territories, the film adaptation sees a suicidal girl stranded on a road trip to meet her boyfriend’s parents. It leads to a twisted mix of palpable tension, psychological frailty, and sheer terror.
