After months of speculation, we’re going to get Bill & Ted 3! The awesome twosome, having saved the world and defied Death previously, will return to the big screen after the original films’ stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter got together to announce the new film.
Bill and Ted 3 is confirmed for next year. The news comes as original stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter got together at the Hollywood Bowl (where they joke they will never get to play – although it’s not clear if they meant them or their characters) to announce the upcoming sequel.
The third film in the series comes 31 years after the 1989 original, with Reeves (who plays Ted) and Winter (who plays Bill) thanking the fans for making the project happen.
Rumours started circulating about the new film when it was revealed a script had been written at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
Details about the new film are still vague but the producers did reveal Bill and Ted 3 picks up the story with the time-travelling slackers having reached middle age having not fulfilled their rock and roll destiny.
A visitor from the future comes to warn them that only their song can save the world, setting them off on another adventure that promises to feature a few old friends and some rock music legends.
Writer Ed Solomon has described the new story as an “utterly absurd, Christmas Carol-like journey through [Bill and Ted’s] lives past, present, and future.”
He also told Digital Spy last year that the new film was in no way a cash-in: “This is, ‘We love these characters, they’ve been with us for our whole lives’ and we wanted to visit them again as middle-aged men. We thought it would be really fun, and funny, and sweet.”
Bill and Ted 3 is due to be directed by Galaxy Quest’s Dean Parisot, with a screenplay from Chris Matheson and Solomon with the title expected to be “Bill and Ted Face the Music”.
