Damian Lewis and Toni Collette will team up for director Euros Lyn’s Dream Horse based on the true story of one woman’s dream to breed and raise a champion racehorse.
The powerhouse pairing of Damian Lewis (who has recently being starring in TV’s Billions) and Toni Collette (who delivered an incredible performance in 2018 horror Hereditary) will team-up for director Euros Lyn’s true story Dream Horse about raising a champion racehorse and the power of competition on an entire community.
Based in Wales, Lyn’s film will seek to deliver feelgood triumph against adversity as Collette takes on the role of Jan, a middle-aged barmaid who decided to swap the working men’s club for the stable when she recruits an initially reluctant husband Brian and local accountant Howard Davies (Lewis) to assist her bring the community together to breed a foal they name Dream Alliance.
A metaphor for the working class tackling the establishment as well as a celebration of it in practice, the racehorse proves himself to be more than a match for the multi-million pound competitors he finds on the track. His success has an impact on everyone, altering the local community’s lives for the better and proving to be a life-changing experience for Jan. He offers her escape from domestic repetition, a friend and a confidante, giving her the chance to put her own needs before others for once.
The film, previously told in the documentary Dark Horse, produced by Judith Dawson and directed by Louise Osmond, boasts the directing talents of Euros Lyn who is best know for some exceptional television work on such drama series as Happy Valley, Kiri Sherlock and Black Mirror. Perhaps more importantly, the story personally resonates: “I grew up in the Welsh valleys where everyone knows this story – it’s a local legend,” says Lyn. ” The moment I read Neil’s brilliant script I knew I had to direct this funny and moving film.
“Casting Toni Collette as Jan Vokes, our extraordinary heroine and Damian Lewis as Howard Davies, her intriguingly conflicted accomplice is my own dream come true. They’re the perfect actors to tell this true story of how against all the odds, an ordinary woman inspires her community to go on the ride of a lifetime and rediscover a sense of hope.”
Producer Katherine Butler said: “I fell in love with this story when I first heard about Louise Osmond’s documentary – and when I met the real people involved, I was hugely inspired by both their steely determination and their joyous outlook on life.
“Our brilliant writer Neil McKay spent hours with many of the people whose story this is to craft an exciting, moving and often hilarious script. And Euros Lyn’s immediate and passionate response to the script completely convinced us that he was born to direct this film.”
Filming begins in spring.
