“The Favourite” Grabs Seven 2019 BAFTA Film Awards

The Favourite took home seven BAFTAs including Outstanding British Film and Leading & Supporting Actress while Roma won Best Film and Best Director.

Yorgos LanthimosThe Favourite stole the show at last night’s EE British Academy Film Awards, going home with seven BAFTAs, including the Outstanding British Film. Meanwhile, Olivia Colman received the BAFTA for Leading Actress, Rachel Weisz took Supporting Actress and Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara won Original Screenplay. Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton won Production Design, Sandy Powell won Costume Design, and Nadia Stacey won Make Up & Hair.

Roma

The second most cherished film was Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, winning in four categories – Best Film, Director, Cinematography, and Film Not in the English Language. The Leading Actor award went to Rami Malik, who portrayed Freddie Mercury in Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Supporting Actor went to Mahershala Ali for his performance as an African-American classical and jazz pianist in Peter Farrelly’s Green Book.

The award for Adapted Screenplay went to Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, while Animated Film went to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Documentary to Free Solo. Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born only went home with Original Music. BAFTA for Editing went to Vice and Special Visual Effects went to Black Panther.

British Short Film award was handed to Alex Lockwood’s 73 Cows and British Short Animation award was won by Roughhouse. Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley, a production partnership that has created iconic British films, including The Crying Game, Company of Wolves, Little Voice, Scandal, Carol and Colette, won the Special Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema.

The highest honour the Academy can present, known as the Fellowship, went to editor Thelma Schoonmaker by HRH The Duke of Cambridge, President of BAFTA, and Cate Blanchett. Meanwhile, Letitia Wright was voted by the public to win the EE Rising Star Award.

Hosted by Joanna Lumley, the ceremony took place at London’s Royal Albert Hall and featured performances by Cirque du Soleil and Jess Gillam.
