Joanna Lumley has been announced as the 2019 BAFTA Film Awards’ host for the second year running. Held at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall on Sunday February 10 2019, the awards ceremony is broadcast for the public on BBC One and BBC One HD.
Joanna Lumley, star of British TV comedy series Absolutely Fabulous and dedicated activist for Survival International and the Gurkha Justice Campaign, has been announced as the 2019 BAFTA Film Awards’ host for the second year running. Lumley, whose television credits include The New Avengers and Sapphire & Steel alongside film appearances in James Bond adventure On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Trail of the Pink Panther, Shirley Valentine, The Wolf of Wall Street and 2016’s Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, will oversee the event held at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall on Sunday February 10 2019. The ceremony is broadcast for the public on BBC One and BBC One HD.
The Director of awards at BAFTA, Emma Baehr said she was thrilled that “Joanna has agreed to return as our host for a second year” She noted how “fantastic” she was in previous years and that BAFTA is “looking forward to the ceremony with her once again at the helm.”
Lucy Noble, Artistic Director at the Royal Albert Hall said she was delighted to be welcoming the EE BAFTA awards to the Hall for a third successive year. “From legendary filmmakers to beloved stars, Hollywood royalty to national treasures, they’ll all pass through the doors of Sir Alfred Hitchcock’s favourite venue,” she said. Indeed, over the past 144 years, it has hosted everyone from Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein to The Beatles, Bob Dylan and more recently Adele. “Following another year of extraordinary movies, we can’t wait to play host to the British film industry’s night of celebration,” she added.
For the third consecutive year, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has chosen to feature the Québec-based entertainment organisation Cirque de Soleil. Residing at the Royal Albert Hall during the Awards, Cirque de Soleil will perform at the ceremony an original piece created especially for the event.
Daniel Lamarre, President & CEO of Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, announced the entertainment company is honoured to be part of the BAFTA Awards for the third consecutive year: “Film, with all of its fascinating facets, continually nourishes and inspires us, and we are thrilled to help celebrate British and international artists from around the world at this year’s BAFTA Awards.”
Shortly after announcing Lumley as host, the EE Rising Star nominations were revealed by broadcaster Edith Bowman and BAFTA Chief Executive Amanda Berry at BAFTA headquarters in Piccadilly, London. This category celebrates outstanding talent on the big screen in 2018 with the winner to be chosen from a group consisting of Jessie Buckley, Cynthia Erivo, Barry Keoghan, Lakeith Stanfield, and Letitia Wright.
The EE British Academy Film Awards are being revealed on Wednesday January 9.
