New Dr Who star Jodie Whittaker, who has appeared in films including debut Venus, Attack the Block, Adult Life Skills and writer-director Paddy Considine’s brilliant Journeyman, will join a growing list of big name actors, including Tom Hardy, to read children’s tales for CBeebies’ Bedtime Story programme.

While she may be missing Christmas as the time-travelling, TARDIS-flying Doctor, Whittaker will make her debut as a CBeebies children’s story reader on December 7.

Whittaker, who took over from Peter Capaldi to become the 13th Doctor, will read Ada Twist, Scientist. The new Time Lord, who joins previous actors to have played the part and read stories on CBeebies such as David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston, says she hopes “everyone enjoys it as much as I did.”

“It is such an honour to know that families and friends will be sharing this experience with me,” said the mother-of-one.

Tom Hardy, Dolly Parton, Orlando Bloom and Ewan McGregor have all read on the show, which airs Monday to Friday.

Doctor Who’s festive edition airs on New Year’s Day.
