101 Films will release Wayne Kramer’s The Cooler on DVD and Blu-ray as title 006 in its Black Label range on December 24.
Starring William H. Macy, Maria Bello, Alec Baldwin and Shawn Hatosy, the film described by one critic as a “complex ‘small’ movie that packs a big punch”, takes an intimate look at Las Vegas’ casinos long before the age of the online gambler.
Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, Macy is the “cooler” of the title, an unlucky gambler by definition, who is used by the casino to pass some of his bad fortune onto winning high rollers. However, his luck appears to change when he meets Maria Bello’s Natalie, a cocktail waitress he begins to fall in love with.
Along with his fortunes changing is his ability to “cool” a winning streak to the chagrin of mob boss Shelly Kaplow (Baldwin) who isn’t going to let Macy’s “Cooler” run off into the sunset. Meanwhile Ron Livingston arrives on the scene to help update the management of this mob-run casino.
101 Films will release The Cooler on Blu-ray for the first time anywhere in the world. The film will be “title 006” in its Black Label range, boasting a brand new feature-length documentary on the making of the film featuring key cast and filmmakers including the director, writer Frank Hannah, actors William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin, Arthur Nascarella and Shawn Hatosy, producers Michael A. Pierce and Elliot Lewis Rosenblatt, composer Mark Isham and costume designer Kristin M. Burke.
