Best kung fu films of the 1990s - Once Upon A Time In China

Tsui Hark’s Once Upon A Time In China trilogy starring Jet Li will be released by Eureka Entertainment on Blu-ray on December 10.

The dazzling kung fu classics arrive for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK having enjoyed a brand new 4K restoration. The first film, widely considered one of the best kung fu films of the 1990s, forms the beginnings of a much-loved trilogy charting China’s transition into the modern world.

Top 10 Films’ own Kung Fu Kritic said the first film contained one of the genre’s most spectacular scenes, ranking it only behind 1993’s Iron Monkey for best kung fu film of the 1990s.

With action sequences choreographed by the legendary Yuen Woo-ping, the Once Upon a Time in China series is a glorious high-point in martial-arts filmmaking, seeing Li portray the real life Cantonese folk hero, Wong Fei-hung, the physical embodiment of traditional Chinese values and moral incorruptibility.

Once Upon a Time in China II – Wong Fei-hung faces off against the White Lotus Cult, a dangerous xenophobic group seeking to drive all European influence out of China, as well as a corrupt military officer, played by Donnie Yen in his breakthrough role.

Once Upon a Time in China III – Wong Fei-hung travels to Peking and is forced to enter a martial-arts contest in order to prevent an assassination attempt against a prominent Chinese diplomat who wants to showcase traditional Chinese martial-arts, and restore national pride.
