Starring Steve Carell, Timothée Chalamet, Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan, Beautiful Boy, which arrives in UK cinemas next year, is based on the best-selling memoirs of father and son David and Nic Sheff which details their experiences with drug addiction.
Based on the memoirs of father and son David and Nic Sheff, published as Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction, Felix Van Groeningen’s (The Broken Circle Breakdown, Belgica) film stars Steve Carell, Timothée Chalamet, Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan in a story of drug addiction and recovery through the eyes of a father. The true and inspiring story of survival, relapse, and recovery has a “lyricism, raw emotion and a sense of mystery that you simply won’t find in any other movie about drug abuse recovery plans,” says the Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab.
The film was shot between March and May 2017 in Los Angeles and San Francisco and had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2018. Released in the U.S. in October, the film has received generally positive reviews with many praising Carell’s performance. AV Club’s A.A. Dowd said the split point of view work well, “coupled with a wealth of ripped-from-experience details” providing a “welcome approach to a subject so frequently explored that you’re lucky to get a drop of fresh insight out of it.”
Beautiful Boy will arrive in UK cinemas in early 2019.
