Mary Queen of Scots sees its stars – Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan – displayed with defiant looks, ready to go to war in a story based on the 1569 conflict that saw an attempt by northern English Knights to depose Elizabeth I.
Exploring the turbulent life of Mary Queen of Scots, the film stars Saoirse Ronan as the eponymous character who becomes queen of France at 16 before returning to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. Margot Robbie plays her distant cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, who holds rule over both England and Scotland. They look upon each other with fear and fascination, each a female regent in a masculine world, each rivals in power and love. But as Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, the course of history is set to change dramatically as betrayal, rebellion and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones.
Mary Queen of Scots is released on UK cinemas on January 19, 2019.
