Benedict Cumberbatch will star in new psychological thriller Rio under the direction of Edward Berger; the pair having previously work together on the critically acclaimed TV drama Patrick Melrose.

Berger, who was nominated for an Emmy Award for Patrick Melrose, will work from a screenplay by Steven Knight (who wrote films such as Locke, Allied and Eastern Promises).

Cumberbatch, who is producing the film with Adam Ackland, will be joined on screen by a stellar cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, who is also a producer, and Michelle Williams.

The thriller focuses on two old friends – one a journalist, the other a hugely successful financier – who meet in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.

Cumberbatch issued a statement on the news, saying he was “delighted to be working with Ed Berger again” and that he can’t wait to bring Rio to life.
