Studio Ponoc, a creative team formed by Studio Ghibli alumni, will see new film Mary and the Witch’s Flower make its UK debut on Digital, Blu-ray, DVD and Special Edition Blu-ray Steelbook on September 10.
From the creators of When Marnie Was There and Arrietty comes Mary and the Witch’s Flower, a tale brimming with the “bounce and spark of childhood”. Described as “Harry Potter meets Spirited Away” by one critic, the newly formed Studio Ponoc (featuring Studio Ghibli alumni) release is a dazzling adventure for all the family.
Adapted from Mary Stewart’s beloved children’s classic The Little Broomstick, the English-language version features a cast of great British actors including Kate Winslet, Jim Broadbent, and Ruby Barnhill as the voice of Mary.
Featuring the spellbinding hand-drawn animation of Studio Ghibli’s renowned work, Mary and the Witch’s Flower sees the spirited Mary spending the summer in the English countryside with her Great Aunt Charlotte. An inquisitive walk in the woods finds her stumbling upon a magical flower that gives a broomstick the ability to fly.
Mary is whisked off into the clouds and brought to Endor College for witchcraft and wizardry. There she meets the seemingly friendly headmistress (Winslet) and eccentric Doctor Dee (Broadbent) but soon the welcoming school reveals a dark side requiring Mary to draw on all her courage to save the day.
Altitude Film Distribution’s releases will all boast the original Japanese language version and the English-language dub. In addition, a collectors special edition Blu-ray steelbook will feature exclusive limited-edition art cards and a special booklet featuring the original dialogue script.
Mary and the Witch’s Flower is available on Digital, Blu-ray, DVD and Special Edition Blu-ray Steelbook from September 10.
