The Nun, which joins Annabelle as a spin-off to The Conjuring, debuted its latest poster hours ahead of a panel discussion at Comic-Con. The convention some have dubbed “Scarediego” because of the abundance of horror films will see the film previewed ahead of its delayed theatrical release on September 7 in the UK.
The Nun, the upcoming supernatural horror film from The Hallow director Corin Hardy, follows the investigation into a mysterious death in fifties Romania. Sent to the Vatican to investigate are a priest and a novitiate nearing her final vows. They uncover dark secrets and not only put their lives but souls on the line to confront a malevolent force who was first witnessed in The Conjuring 2.
The fifth addition to The Conjuring franchise, The Nun promises to capture the visceral thrills of Hardy’s debut horror which combined an unnerving atmosphere with genuine emotions and characters you cared about. Hardy will hope to continue where James Wan and others have prospered. He clearly has a great villain in the form of a demonic nun to evoke the film’s big scares.
During the filming of Annabelle: Creation, producer Peter Safran said The Nun would come first in The Conjuring franchise’s chronology, further extending this horror series’ shared cinematic universe. He remarked at the time: “We have a board that we created that has what we hope will ultimately be our series of movies. We have it in chronological order, so we can keep track of where it all happens.”
Principal photography for The Nun began on May 3, 2017 at Castel Film Studios in Bucharest, Romania, and wrapped 38 days later. Warner Bros. Pictures originally planned to release it earlier this year but the release date (confirmed at Comic-Con) is now September 7 (in the US and UK). Some territories will get it one day earlier.
