The Brilliant “Lady Bird” Lands On DVD & Blu-ray

Greta Gerwig’s brilliant coming of age drama Lady Bird has arrived on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK following its Digital release on June 18. The Oscar-nominated film was one of many critics’ favourite movies in 2017.

Lady BirdFrom Greta Gerwig’s semi-autobiographical script and under her direction comes Lady Bird, 2017’s Oscar-nominated coming of age drama about the turbulent relationship between a mother (Laurie Metcalf) and teenage daughter (Saoirse Ronan). The film, which got its Digital release in June, now lands on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK with a feature commentary with Gerwig and cinematographer Sam Levy.

Lady Bird, which enjoyed a unique claim to fame in late 2017 when it became the most reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes to remain at 100% “Fresh”, sees writer-director Gerwig emerge as a bold new cinematic voice whose ability to capture humour and pathos in modern day relationships captured the hearts and minds of cinemagoers and critics last year.

Its focus is on a wildly opinionated and adventurous woman as she navigates her way through adulthood trying to find her true identity. In the film, which A.O. Scott of The New York Times said was “big-screen perfection … exceptionally well-written, full of wordplay and lively argument”, Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Ronan) fights against her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mum (Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father (Tracy Letts) loses his job.

Set in 2002, the Sacramento, California backdrop stages a rapidly shifting American economic landscape. Lady Bird is a beautiful, warm and inspired piece of filmmaking that is small in scale but ambitious in its ideas. It offers affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released Lady Bird on Digital on June 18 and on DVD & Blu-ray™ on July 2.
