With the summer nearly upon and a celebration of fatherhood everywhere, Top 10 Films takes a look at our favourite gifts for dads in 2018.
Top 10 Films takes a look at some great gifts for movie-loving dads on Father’s Day including technology, new film releases, food and drink, and experience days.
For the dad who loves movies, the must-buy new release is Darkest Hour starring the great Gary Oldman. During the early days of World War II, with the fall of France imminent, Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms. As the seemingly unstoppable Nazi forces advance, and with the Allied army cornered on the beaches of Dunkirk, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the leadership of the newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman).
While maneuvering his political rivals, he must confront the ultimate choice: negotiate with Hitler and save the British people at a terrible cost or rally the nation and fight on against incredible odds. Directed by Joe Wright, Darkest Hour is the dramatic and inspiring story of four weeks in 1940 during which Churchill’s courage to lead changed the course of world history.
Killing two birds with one stone – for the Dad who loves movies and football. Here’s the excellent new documentary about Bobby Robson.

THE BIG TREAT
Rock Rose Gin – Summer Edition
There’s a reason Rock Rose Gin is my favourite to mix with a good quality slimline tonic. The new “Summer Edition” from the Dunnet Bay Distillers is a wonderfully invigorating citrus-inspired gin for the sunnier months that boasts Rock Rose’s trademark attention to detail and keepsake ceramic bottle.
Distilled using ingredients from Dunnet Bay’s gardens and rockery to produce a seasonal taste to its traditional bottle, Rock Rose challenged itself last year to make a citrus-style gin using botanicals growing in the distillery gardens and with no peels. Plenty of time and research was undertaken with Hanna, Dunnet Bay’s gardener, who planted, harvested and dried the botanicals (including lemon balm, clover, lemon thyme, pineapple sage, meadowsweet and elderflower) that went into this wonderful summer edition gin.

THE BIG EXPERIENCE
For that once in a lifetime experience, why not give The London Helicopter experience to your dad on Father’s Day. For those that love movies, dad’s will get a chance to see some of London’s landmarks as featured in classic British and Hollywood movies such as Harry Potter, James Bond and Mission: Impossible recently. You can give your dad a gift voucher for a flight around London or a monetary voucher towards the journey with all the details here.
THE BIG READ
Goldfinger from Folio Society
We just love these books from Folio Society. Every one of its releases is beautifully and lovingly created to present a keepsake as well as a piece of classic literature. For Father’s Day 2018 we have to highlight another wonderful release in its series of Ian Fleming books which celebrate James Bond like never before in print.
Goldfinger from Folio Society is illustrated by Fay Dalton who has produced seven exquisite colour illustrations that boast a fitting sense of glamour and dynamism that befits Britain’s super spy. For the special illustrated slipcase, Dalton has recreated the infamous death of Jill Masterton, enshrined in shimmering gold.
Originally titled The Richest Man in the World, Goldfinger, many film fans’ favourite James Bond movie, introduces the terrifying Oddjob and master thief Pussy Galore as well as the eponymous chief villain.
It’s a story that sees Fleming at the heights of his powers. “Opening with Bond enjoying what he believes is a simple game of cat and mouse, Fleming gradually heightens the tension until the reader, along with Bond, realises that the agent has fatally underestimated the strange, gold-obsessed millionaire,” says The Folio Society.
“In this book Fleming reveals a more contemplative side to his secret agent – Bond is a man who thrives on danger, yet in his quieter moments is troubled by the bystanders who bear the brunt of violence. While his adventures are often gloriously fantastical and populated with grotesque villains, Fleming maintains a steely reality through the relentless efficiency of his protagonist. For fans familiar only with the films, Goldfinger’s Bond will be a welcome revelation: deadly and unflappable, he is also a character of many layers.”
The Folio Society has also released a wonderful version of Fahrenheit 451 featuring an introduction from writer Michael Moorcock, one of the most important figures in British SF and Fantasy literature, and illustrations from Sam Weber.
Ray Bradbury’s classic envisages a dystopian future in which the job of firemen is to seek out books and burn them. In this edition, Weber’s astonishing illustrations perfectly capture the novel’s haunting atmosphere.
TIME TO PLAY
A bit of fun for the movie-loving dad this Father’s Day comes from Playmobil in the form of this brilliant recreation of the Ghostbusters’ vehicle. Put together the famous vehicle for a nice film-related keepsake or inspire the kids to enjoy a classic 1980s movie. The package comes complete with Winston Zeddemore and Janine Melnitz in the Ghostbusters outfits. There’s even a light and sound module for that added enjoyment.
The vehicle offers space for four Ghostbusters figures, their proton packs, ghost traps and other equipment with roof detachment and door-opening mechanism enhancing immersion. With the working light and sound module on the roof, the original siren sound and blue light can be activated using separate buttons. Other accessories include two detachable proton packs with proton wands, opening ghost trap, PKE meter for measuring psychokinetic energy, and a silicone slime blower which sticks to smooth surfaces.
TICKLE THE TASTE BUDS
Jawbox Small Batch Gin
Jawbox Small Batch Gin is distilled near Belfast, at the Jawbox Distillery located on a 300-acre 16th-century estate where the grain for the spirit is grown and harvested. Jawbox Gin is perfect for the adventurous, confident and curious gin drinker and an ideal gift for the gin-curious dad this Father’s Day.
Why not try Jawbox’s The Perfect Swerve this Father’s Day – the original Gin & Ginger Belfast serve, mixed with ginger ale. Belfast has famously created many things, from mighty ships to delicate linens. However, there is another, perhaps less well-known gift the city has given the world: zesty, refreshing ginger ale!
You can buy your bottle at Amazon here.
Hayman’s of London Gin
Hayman’s of London, makers of True English Gin, have launched a limited edition London Dry gift pack, perfect for Father’s Day. In addition, London Dry is offering gin-loving dads the chance to tour the new distillery in Balham with complimentary G&T plus gin tasting. More information can be found here.
Top 10 Films is particularly fond of Hayman’s True English London Dry which, unlike other London Dry Gins available today, is distilled to a 150-year-old family recipe using a traditional two-day process.
Steeping the long-standing family recipe of just ten botanicals in English wheat spirit for a full day before distillation creates a fresh, bright and classically balanced gin with crisp citrus, subtle notes of exotic spice and the remarkable depth and complexity traditionally associated with the London Dry style.
Uniquely suited to the classic cocktails of the 19th and early 20th Century that were built around the style, we recommend enjoying the True English London Dry’s crisp complexity in a refreshing G&T or James Bond style in a classic martini.
Monkey Shoulder Whisky
Ideal for that summer drink in front of a good film or outside while enjoying BBQ, Monkey Shoulder whisky is a great option for making a Lazy Old Fashioned. And given it was party time at Top 10 Films head office, we decided to build our cocktail in the bottle.
Here’s how it’s done. Get yourself a 700ml bottle of Monkey Shoulder and enjoy 100ml straight, however you like it. Me – it’s over two cubes of ice. Afterwards, add 100ml of Demerara syrup (dissolve equal parts sugar and water in a pan and leave to cool), and 15ml of Angostura Bitters.
To serve, mix well in the bottle then pour over ice cubes dressed with a slice of orange peel. The rest of the bottle is then ready for subsequent pours. This batch will be enough for 14 servings. More details about Monkey Shoulder can be found here.
Wild Turkey 101 Whisky
This year I discovered Wild Turkey 101, an authentic American bourbon, that’s particularly apt for giving on Father’s Day as it’s distilled by a father/son team. It’s another great whisky for an Old Fashioned with a shot of Wild Turkey complemented by a couple of dashes of Angostura Bitters and a little Demerara syrup. You can find out more about Wild Turkey 101 as well stockists here.
Patrón Añejo Tequila
For the father’s who don’t like whisky, Patrón Añejo tequila might fit the bill. The personalised touch of the brand sees every bottle numbered by hand, making this a far more intimate gift for a loved one that typical off-the-shelf beverages. Its smooth, sweet flavours are perfect to drink straight or in a cocktail. Indeed, you can make a classic Old Fashioned with Patrón Añejo for a unique tequila experience.
