One of the best films of 2017 – and Top 10 Films’ 2nd best British film of the year – God’s Own Country arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on January 29.
Francis Lee’s celebrated debut feature, God’s Own Country, has won plaudits and appreciation from audiences, critics and peers alike. Since launching at Sundance Film Festival in early 2017 and opening the 2017 Edinburgh International Film Festival, where it won the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature, the contemporary tale of self-discovery and emotional-awakening set on the sheep farming hills of rural England has gone on to win widespread acclaim.
The recent 2017 British Independent Film Awards saw God’s Own Country win the Best British Independent Film Award, alongside Best Actor for Josh O’Connor, Debut Screenwriter for Francis Lee, along with the Best Sound award.
In compiling our top 10 British films of 2017 Rory Fish said: “You won’t see many directorial debuts better than this and certainly none in 2017. A film that uplifts amidst a pervading bleakness, that transforms for the better despite the anxieties of life pulling at efforts to find one’s calling, Francis Lee’s film has catapulted the filmmaker to the “one to watch” crowd with its array of awards and critical adulation.”
Johnny Saxby (Josh O’Connor; The Riot Club, The Durrells) works long hours on his family’s remote farm in the north of England. He numbs the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly binge-drinking at the local pub and casual sex.
But when a handsome Romanian migrant worker (Alec Secareanu) arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before. As they begin working closely together during lambing season, an intense relationship starts to form which could change Johnny’s life forever.
Supporting the central pair are acting stalwarts Ian Hart (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, The Last Kingdom) and Gemma Jones (Spooks, Bridget Jones’s Diary), who respectively play Johnny’s ailing father Martin and formidable grandmother Deirdre.
Captivating and broodingly beautiful, God’s Own Country is a thrillingly romantic story. Both poignant and moving, this finely crafted British film features a host of standout performances, cementing it as one of the most successful films of the year.
God’s Own Country is available Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital from January 29, 2018. It had an exclusive Digital EST release on January 22.
