The latest novel from Century chronicling the Star Wars story sees Christie Golden’s “Battlefront II: Inferno Squad” follow events after the theft of the Death Star plans in Rogue One as the Imperial Navy forms an elite team of soldiers to infiltrate the resistance movement.
Already heralded as another exciting thriller in the Star Wars story’s novelisation, Christie Golden’s Battlefront II: Inferno Squad premises November’s new video game, introducing us to the Imperial Navy’s special forces unit as it prepares to infiltrate and eliminate Saw Gerrera’s Partisans.
Mitch Dyer, who co-wrote Star Wars Battlefront II with Walt Williams, says Golden is the ideal person to take up the story. “Author Christie Golden is incredible at finding the heart of a character, pushing it to its breaking point, and leaving the reader in ruins,2 he said. “Inferno Squad packs serious emotional punches because of Christie. She will make you weep for Imperial heroes you’ll fall in love with. Even if you don’t agree with the Empire, you will know Inferno Squad as people who fight for what matters.
The book neatly ties-in the novel series with the wider Star Wars universe. Despite this being about the bad guys, they’re a bunch of characters we can relate to with writer Golden proving adept at providing immersive and satisfactory character arcs. There’s also the pleasing inclusion of another strong female character.
The book gives us chance to get to know each of the four main Inferno Squad members but its Iden who stands out. She’s a strong soldier but her internal anxieties and connection with the Empire make her a far more interesting character than the rest.
What’s fascinating is seeing the rebels from the perspective of the Imperial Navy. Regular readers will know that has been the main focus for tie-in books such as Lost Stars, Tarkin, and Rogue One: Catalyst. They are characters who are alive with terrific descriptions and relationships. It becomes an exciting and thrilling mystery uncovering the secrets of the Partisans alongside our Inferno Squad protagonists.
Indeed, Golden is quite happy eschewing the action normally associated with Star Wars to make Battlefront II: Inferno Squad more of an adventure mystery or espionage thriller. It makes for an often fun story somewhat departed from the typical Star Wars narrative.
The story takes place after the humiliating theft of the Death Star plans and the resulting destruction of the battle station. Now the Empire is on the defensive. In response to this surprise defeat, the Imperial Navy creates the elite fight force known as the Inferno Squad to find and destroy Saw Gerrera’s remaining resistance forces. This extremist group continue to carry out their dead leader’s strategy, determined to thwart the Empire regardless of cost. Inferno Squad’s mission is to destroy the Partisans from within.
