Described as “violently funny”, “fiendishly smart” and “shockingly effective”, Australian comedy The Smuggler aka The Mule arrives in select cinemas, on DVD and VOD from Feb 22.
Featuring The Matrix’s Hugo Weaving, The Smuggler, which has enjoyed some good press in the States and its homeland Australia, arrives in select UK cinemas from Feb 22. A violently amusing comedy, the Huffington Post’s review is perhaps the most noteworthy when it said: “One scene in particular is one of the most disgusting things I’ve seen on screen for some time and it had the audience gasping with horror as it unfolded.” IGN added that it was a “gleefully nauseating thriller”.
The film’s darkly comic screenplay was penned by three of Australia’s most exciting on and off screen talents – actor Leigh Whannell (Saw, Insidious) and actor-director Angus Sampson and director Jaime Browne. Formally known as The Mule, it stars Weaving alongside Sampson and Whannell with a fantastic ensemble cast including Ewen Leslie, Geoff Morrell, Georgina Haig, Noni Hazlehurst and John Noble.
Inspired by true events, The Smuggler comically tells the tale of a naive man who is detained by federal police with lethal narcotics hidden in his stomach. Alone and afraid, ‘the Mule’ makes a desperate choice; to defy his bodily functions and withhold the evidence… literally. By doing so he becomes a ‘human time bomb’, dragging cops, criminals and concerned family into his impossible escapade.
The film premiered to widespread acclaim at South by Southwest festival and had its European premiere at the BFI London Film Festival before touring Australia ahead of it’s day on date release which saw it top the iTunes chart for independent releases.
