Away from the cape and hammer of Thor, Top 10 Films takes a look at some other notable performances from actor Chris Hemsworth including The Cabin In The Woods and Rush.
Australian star Chris Hemsworth has shot to fame thanks to landing the role of the mighty Thor and joining the huge money-spinning Marvel universe as well as becoming a fully-fledged member of the latest big-screen incarnation of ‘The Avengers’. But even if you didn’t know it, Hemsworth has also had a number of other notable roles away from his legendary cape and hammer.
The Cabin In The Woods
Due to various production issues and studio-related financial difficulties it took a while for Drew Goddard and The Avengers director Joss Whedon’s fun horror opus The Cabin in the Woods to make it into theatres, and boy we weren’t disappointed. It was an excellent tongue in cheek look at traditional “cabin” horror movies with plenty of unexpected twists along the way. Chris Hemsworth plays Curt, who on the face of it appears to be a typical jock and the ideal horror fodder. However everyone in the movie is not what you would typically expect and it’s up to a mysterious company monitoring the action to force each character into a more recognizable line-up of cliché horror characters. And this is where we see Curt transform from intelligent, likeable Curt into nothing more than a horny teenager.
Director Ron Howard tackles the biographical rivalry between legendary Formula 1 motor racing drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Hemsworth landed the role of the Formula 1 playboy James Hunt and managed to bring real heart and passion to the challenging role especially for a character that was very much flawed. Thankfully the movie was character driven and not simply about the breakneck races that the two competed in. It’s Hemsworth’s strongest role to date but unfortunately it was only co-star Daniel Brühl who managed to pick up a nomination this time around.
A Perfect Getaway
This excellent little thriller bypassed most people but is another fine example of Chris’s range. We follow Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich as a young newlywed couple who are travelling through Hawaii. But on their journey they come across two other couples including hitchhikers Kale (played by Chris Hemsworth) and Cleo, who the others suspect of a recent double murder than took place in Honolulu. There are lots of thrilling twists to keep everyone guessing and Hemsworth puts in a notably sinister performance.
Of course we couldn’t complete the list without including his much praised portrayal of Thor. A performance which has certainly led to a surge in the character’s popularity with games like the Thunderstuck slot paying homage to the role as well as plenty of other merchandising opportunities coming to fruition. He made his feature debut as the comic-book God back in 2011 for British director Kenneth Branagh and has appeared 3 further times as the caped hero with another outing in Thor: Ragnarok scheduled for 2017.
