Joe Wright’s “Atonement”

“Dearest Cecilia, the story can resume. The one I had been planning on that evening walk. I can become again the man who once crossed the surrey park at dusk, in my best suit, swaggering on the promise of life. The man who, with the clarity of passion, made love to you in the library. The story can resume. I will return. Find you, love you, marry you and live without shame.”

“Atonement” is widely regarded as one of the finest films of the past ten years. Andrew (Encore Entertainment) and Yojimbo (Let’s Not Talk About Movies) analyse the lead up to Celilia and Robbie’s meeting at the fountain. As you’ll discover, it is a beautiful and moving sequence, perfectly composed by director Joe Wright.

I was just talking about McAvoy yesterday on my blog. I LOVE this movie, it’s lush and beautifully acted, especially McAvoy and Ronan. I really like all the narration of letter reading, it’s so romantic. It’s one of those movies that’s unabashedly romantic yet heart-wrenchingly tragic at the same time.
