Iconic Images: The Shining

When you think of Jack Nicholson’s characters…do you think: plaster on the broken nose (Chinatown), the Joker’s “painted” face (Batman), or this indelible image…

When it comes to the horror film there are a number of stand out images that have become icons of the genre and the films themselves. I’m thinking of the harsh beam of light that unnervingly welcomes Father Merrin in The Exorcist to the house of the possessed girl or Marion Crane’s scream in the “shower scene” of Hitchcock’s Psycho. However, perhaps neither image leaves such a spine-tingling mark on the audience as Jack Torrance crashing through the bathroom door in Kubrick’s The Shining.

I’ve always thought this was an amazing image. It’s so haunting because of the pure insanity of the moment it captures. You can’t think of The Shining without jumping to this truly iconic moment.

The image that comes to my mind, right away is Malcolm McDowell in
A Clockwork Orange as he is being behavioral reconditioned. The steel electro rods on his head.
