Top 10 Superpowers

Delving once again into the world of fantasy and adventure, Claire Packer takes a look at the superpowers she would love to try her hand at.

During the press tour for X-Men: First Class I remember an interview with Michael Fassbender (Erik Lehnsherr) where he said that if he had a superpower it would be a tail, which wasn’t really the answer I was expecting. Well, that’s The Fass for you. Apparently it was so that he could hold things with it, use it to swing off buildings and for extra balance.

This got me thinking, what would I like to have as my superpower? For a while now I’ve thought that I would love the ability to run incredibly fast, so fast that you’d be able to run over water. It’s a very eco-friendly ability as I’d never have to catch a flight again. New Zealand? I’ll be there in five minutes!

Thinking back to the X-Men characters and all the other comic book heroes from Marvel, DC and co, these are the Top 10 Superpowers that I think would be pretty fantastic, and I mean just to have in everyday life, not to become a caped vigilante!

As always, leave a comment – what would your superpower be?

10. Telepathy – as used by Professor X, X-Men

x men, telekinesis,
Telepathy is undoubtedly very, very cool but I couldn’t think of many everyday situations where it’d come in use, hence the low position. Sookie Stackhouse in one of my favourite TV shows, True Blood, has this ability and she finds it quite a nuisance, often saying that it gets too noisy hearing other people’s thoughts. It would be useful if you wanted to chat to a co-worker or friend without anyone else hearing but then it does kind of depend on who else is telepathic… What do you think? Would telepathy be of any use in everyday life?

9. Change into a different form – as used by Mystique, X-Men

mystique, x men,
Again, this is a very groovy ability but I’m not sure how useful it’d be in everyday life. It would definitely be able you to get out of lots of tricky situations but then I can’t say that I’m in a huge amount normally… I’ve always thought this about Mystique, though. The ability to change your appearance is only ever really useful in criminal situations. What do you reckon?

8. Walk through walls – as used by Kitty Pryde, X-Men

x men, superpowers, walk through walls,
Now this might seem a little daft but how useful would it be? Especially if you are lazy! You’d never have to bothered with those pesky things called ‘doors’ ever again. The ability to walk through walls would be able to get you out of many a tricky situation, too. Let’s say you’re having a chat with a co-worker when, suddenly, you’re boss starts heading your way. You haven’t done that report they asked for so it’s time to make a quick exit. They’d see you if you went through the door but, no worries, you have the ability to walk through walls! It may give the person the other side of the wall a bit of a start but, never mind, you’ll be away from the boss in no time!

7. See through walls – as used by Superman

see through walls, superman, christopher reeve,
As with No 10, there are many work-related situations that the ability to see through walls would be useful for. Having a quick gossip about your boss? Well, have a quick scan of around the building to make sure that they’re nowhere close by. Similarly, if your everyday job was, let’s say, a thief, this ability would certainly help you out no end.

6. Control the weather – as used by Storm, X-Men

storm, x men, film, superhero, superpowers,
Now this ability would be fantastic if you have a job that requires you to be outside most of the time. If it’s not and you fancy a change of scenery, you could become some kind-of ‘super gardener’ – whether your plants need lots of sunshine or lots of rain, Super Gardener would be able to provide it. Your ability would also come in pretty useful if you worked in the Fire Service or were a professional windsurfer.

5. Super strength – as used by Hulk

hulk, film, superpowers, super strength
This may sound a little strange but on more than one occasion when I’ve parked my car and realised I’m a little far away from the kerb I’ve thought: “I wish I could just pick up the car and move it closer”. Well, if I had super strength then I’d be able to, no problems! Tired arms from carrying shopping bags would be a thing of the past, and you’d never have to hire removal men ever again. Carry a fridge up five flights of stairs would be easy peasy.

4. Telekinesis – as used by Jean Grey, X-Men

famke janssen, x men,
This would be another fantastic ability for those who are lazy among us, and I count myself in that group! Fancy a drink or a snack but don’t want to leave your seat in front of the TV? Never fear, simply move that bottle of Coke or packet of crisps with your mind – you’ll never have to leave your seat again!

In a non-lazy respect, I think this ability would be pretty useful because you could use this super ability if you have lost something. If you’re prone to losing your keys or mobile then you could summon them using telekinesis.

3. To fly – as used by Superman

flying superman,
The ability to fly is in the same family as my No 1. If I had the ability to fly then I’d be very, very eco-friendly. I’d swop the drive to work for a gentle fly instead. I could ever provide my own taxi service, one person at a time, of course. While not that useful in my current everyday life, if I had the ability to fly then I’m sure I’d adapt my everyday life and make full use of it.

2. Understand any language – as used by Wonder Woman

sexy super heroes, wonder woman, lynda carter,
I used to study French until I was 17. Sadly, I’ve forgotten everything but the basics. The ability to understand any language would be incredibly useful and the world would be, quite literally, your oyster. The phrase ‘language barrier’ would mean absolutely nothing to you – très bien!

1. Teleportation – as used by Nightcrawler, X-Men

nightcrawler, x men, super hero,
The ultimate No 1 superpower has got to be the ability to teleport – how many times have you wished you could be someone instantly? I know I have lots of times, especially when it comes to travelling long distances or being stuck in traffic. The ability to teleport would mean that you would never be late for work, never be late for an appointment, never miss a plane… the list really is endless!

Your turn – What would you choose…the ability to fly, telekinesis, super strength…? Which ones haven’t we mentioned?

changellling, flying, moving things with your mind and being invisible would be my top super powers, but if I could choose one you know I would love to control plants, animals and the whole nature something like Poison Ivy from Batman 🙂 I also love all the elven powers from LOTR and other similar epics.

I’m partial to Wolverine’s healing factor, myself (especially now since I’ve gotten older ;-)). Fine list and post, Claire. Thanks.

…first thoughts: I’d like to explore a little more of Wonder Woman! 🙂

This is a really fascinating list Claire. I’ve always thought that if I could have a special power it would be time travel but in terms of superpowers the question gets tougher. I think the ability to see through walls or read people’s minds would be both fun and worthwhile! 🙂

I’ve got to go with being able to fly. Flying opens up a lot of doors.

@Rodney: Invisibility! …to be that fly on the wall of some of the world’s most secretive yet historically important moments…fascinating.

@Fitz: Flying definitely has the fun factor. My vertigo would be a stumbling block though! 🙂

Nice feature Claire! Teleportation would certainly be the best superpower IMO but I would probably have being invisible (as in Harry Potter with the invisibility cloak) a close second.

@Novroz, Castor and David: It would be very funny to see all of us teleport at the same time! It’d be like something out of Star Trek 😛

@Dezmond: The ability to control nature would be very, very cool! Good suggestion.

@le0pard13: Healing would be FANTASTIC! Would you prefer fast healing or immortality? That’s the question!

    @Rodney: Rodney, you’re a very cheeky little scamp 😛

@everyone: Thanks for your comments, this was a fun list to do! 🙂

    Claire! I love this!

    Okay, let me see:

Teleportation; Invisibility; Spider-Man’s powers of wall-crawling, proportionate strength, agility, and Spider sense; Jedi-mind trick powers; and telekinesis.

Oh, and I need Magneto’s power. Yep, need it! haha.
