Never a Batman fan, and I don't go to the movies like I used to, but, in my idle time I decided to Google the big question (Who will be the next BM?) and looked at two sites - Hitfix and Huffington Post.

Combined they threw up a bunch of names that were obvious (Ryan Gosling, Jake Gyllenhall, Josh Harnett) and not so obvious (Idris Elba, Joe Mangenlello and Armie Harner).

Missing were two possible ones ... Josh Brolin and (don't laff) Ethan Hawke.

Brolin - having George W and a younger Two-Face playing BM would be kinda funny; Hawke - he's still got it it.

@Mark: Jaws is always the one of a couple I highlight when people say the films are never as good as the books. I hated the ending of Jaws in novel form but actually felt the whole book was average. The other, and this one is controversial, is The Shining. As much as I admire Stephen King's work, Kubrick's vision of The Shining, although very different from the book, had a whole new aura about it that simplified and improved the story.

You could also argue, on the subject of King, that the adaptations of his short stories and novellas actually add to the original stories (and not just in length) - ie. Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption (others haven't work so well admittedly, I didn't care for 1408 and I was one of only a few who didn't like The Mist).

"Charlton Heston and his shotgun-happy cronies would be quite happy to see Straw Dogs’ message of vigilante retribution as the answer to such female violation."

On the subject of female violation, there's an interesting episode about one third of the way through Norman Mailer's sprawling CIA novel Harlot's Ghost when the story's three main protagonists go to see Bruce circa the late 1950s. One of them, Kitteridge, is heavily pregnant.

During his routine Bruce gets stuck into Christianity.

"Now that we're on the subject, let's get to the big lie. What, you never shtupped a guy? Come on Mary, not even one stud? Not one leaky drop got in? It was a what-do-you-call-it? A what? An immaculate conception? Well, knock off, Mary. I'm not blind and dumb. I don't buy stories that stupid."

At this point Kitteridge gets up and takes a step towards the stage, intent on "smaking his filthy mouth", before being escorted out the door by her husband and the narrator.

"Do you know," she later says, "I thought if I could beat that dreadful man with my handbag,I would knock something back into place."

Forgive this ramble, but after having read this review, I do find it interesting that a woman who is married to the dastardly CIA would take such umbrage at Bruce's schtick.

Whether she's a closet feminist or not, one thing's for certain - good thing they didn't go and see Staw Dogs.

Hi, Holly and company:

Interesting question!

Best physical/overall portrayal of Batman/Bruce Wayne?

Physical: Christian Bale.

Overall: Kevin Conroy's superb vocal talents optimized in Warner Brothers 'Batman: The Animated Series'.

You know, I'm not really a fan of this one. It's kind of boring to me. The two things I liked were Roddy McDowell and the melting assistant. That's about it. I know a lot of people love this one, but it didn't do anything for me.

Yeah, that's a great one for a blockbuster with a boat-load of them (sorry, couldn't resist). Well done, Dan.
