Disaster films have wowed audiences since the early part of the 20th century. Films such as Metropolis (1927) and King Kong (1933) displayed major catastrophes affecting hundreds of people. In Metropolis it was a flood, in King Kong it was a rampaging giant ape. A catastrophe of epic proportions creates the centre of these films and that can take the form of anything from alien invasion, natural disaster such as earthquake or hurricane to accidents like plane crashes or terrorist attacks. Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is one of the most financially successful films ever made. It is also loved by critics as exampled by its 100% Fresh rating on Rottentomatoes.com. Not only that, it is one of the most widely decorated films ever made, collecting three Oscars as well as ranking highly on hundreds of top films lists including being named as one of the top 100 films ever made by Total Film, the 5th best film ever made by Empire, and the 48th best film ever made by the American Film Institute.

Hollywood decided to remake not only the best horror films it could find in the east but also its own classics. Added gore, 3D, silly titles, worthless sequels, and vacuous characters were the order of the day. So, to discover the best in horror cinema during the 2000s, audiences had to look elsewhere – to Europe, South America, and Australia. There were some gems to be found in the States, but many of the most unique and frightening horror experiences were to be found elsewhere.
