Steven Spielberg’s wife Kate Capshaw won’t allow her husband to make comedies. Or so he says. You look at the director’s career to date and comedy only really features as the lighter tones of fantasy and adventure. If indeed Capshaw denies Spielberg comedy because of his indifferent efforts on 1941, you’d forgive her for her concern. But if The Terminal is anything to go by, Spielberg should make comedy films more often.

To kick off I’m returning to one of my favourite actors – Tom Hanks. I put together my top 10 a few months ago which only included his film between the years 1984 to 1989. Now, let us open it up. What is Tom Hanks’ best film? Do you prefer the actor’s early comedy period which inluded such classics as “The Money Pit”, “Splash”, and “Big”? Or are you a fan of the actor’s post-”Philadelphia” work – more dramatic films which include “Apollo 13″ and “Saving Private Ryan”? You’ll find some food for thought at Tom Hanks’ IMDB page here.

From 1984 to 1989 Tom Hanks solidified himself as one of the Hollywood elite. Aside from a couple of more restrained dramas in the middle of the period showing his diversity and pre-cursing his later work, predominantly the films of the middle to late eighties highlighted Hanks’ natural gift for comedy. His characters were always loveable yet flawed creations that pulled at the heart strings while playing relentlessly on the funny bone.
For many, Tom Hanks’ body of comedic work during the 1980s was the actor’s finest and most enduring. …
