Rodney Tweltree’s turn to look at the top 10 films of Steven Spielberg. In a list quite different from our editor Dan Srephens’s Top 10, Rodney sees Spielberg’s most recent films as deserving more credit. He says: Ever since he burst onto the scene in the mid 70′s with Duel, and more successfully with Jaws, audiences have flocked to see his films in droves. Whether it’s the popcorn munching thrills of the latest Indiana Jones adventure, the shocking and saddening wartime bravura of Schindler’s List, or the thunderous bass levels of Jurassic Park, it’s an undeniable fact that for over thirty years Mr Spielberg has been giving film fans the movies they’ve wanted to see.

Erm…well I hope there’s been some anticipation anyway. Here at Top10Films the top 10 film list is our bread and butter and after a week long celebration of Steven Spielberg it was only right that we should end with our list of Spielberg’s finest achievements.

So here it is: the ten finest pieces of work by the genius that is Steven Spielberg…

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is one of the most financially successful films ever made. It is also loved by critics as exampled by its 100% Fresh rating on Rottentomatoes.com. Not only that, it is one of the most widely decorated films ever made, collecting three Oscars as well as ranking highly on hundreds of top films lists including being named as one of the top 100 films ever made by Total Film, the 5th best film ever made by Empire, and the 48th best film ever made by the American Film Institute.

Who directed Poltergeist is a question that has been raised many times between fans of the film ever since an article appeared in the L.A. Times in 1982. The article, about a set visit during principle photography, queried whether credited director Tobe Hooper was actually at the helm. On the day of the newspaper’s visit Steven Spielberg was directing some on-location shots and Hooper was nowhere to be seen.

Chris Evans of The Independent wrote an article in 2008 entitled: “How Sir David Lean had an epic falling out with Steven Spielberg over the filming of a Conrad novel”. The article, concerning Lean’s great unmade epic Nostromo based on Joseph Conrad’s 1904 novel, told of how Spielberg and Lean had a big falling out over the project due to that oft-repeated phrase “creative difference”

Steven Spielberg has presided over some of cinema’s most memorable scenes for the past 35 years. From the iconic lines “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” and “Smile you son of a b****” to the shot of water ripples in Jurassic Park and the kids flying through the night sky in E.T. Here’s ten of the director’s finest moments – what are your favourites?

Having not seen the film for many years what struck me most was the postmodernist and self-reflexive attitude of the film, parodying the ‘event’ movie that Spielberg almost single-handedly created in the first place. It’s a self-aware bit of humour that Spielberg isn’t really known for. The character of Hammond, constantly alluding to the fact no expense was spared could be the mantra of Jurassic Park’s producers and Spielberg himself, but couple this with the film’s blatant product placement and the central conceit of a theme park and ride (Jurassic Park clothing, lunch boxes, t-shirts, etc., were readily available to the public when the film was released; the theme park ride would come a little later), and you discover a rather interesting aside to the film.

Steven Spielberg returns to the film that made him a star and a billionnaire. Bringing back key character Matt Hooper with Richard Dreyfuss on board to act in the film, Jaws 5 is going to be the biggest hit of summer 2012.

The year is 2020. It is 45 years since ichthyologist Matt Hooper went out onto the ocean with police chief Martin Brody and fisherman Quint to kill the terrifying great white shark terrorising the beach community of Amity Island. He has become the leading figure in marine biology and the study of sharks. He has also become a minor celebrity after his exploits in 1975.
