Top 10 Top 10s of 2011: Review of the Year

27 December 2011 21 Comments

Top 10 Films looks back over the year at its most popular top 10 lists. From scariest film to romance that men can enjoy and films that have driven people to crime plus many more…

I’ve been lucky enough to see some fantastic films this year that have inspired me to write some interesting top 10s, some of which have proven very popular in 2011. I’ve also had the pleasure of reading and publishing some wonderfully entertaining and fascinating lists from Top 10 Films’ array of brilliant contributors. As a look back over the year I thought it would be nice to list my personal favourites including some of my own top 10s as well as those written by my team of contributing writers.

But before I dive into my review of the year I’d like to thank new contributors Rob Keeling (who wrote our recently published Top 10 Martin Scorsese Films list) and Claire Packer (who writes the wonderful film blog Cinematic Delights) for their valuable contributions. I’d also like to extend a thank you to film critics Andy Boxall and Chris Wharfe for their help in getting through the ever-increasing stack of review discs that arrive on Top 10 Films’ doorstep.

Right, lets get to it. The following ten top 10s are my personal favourites from 2011. Hopefully new readers will find something they might not have seen before while regular visitors can reminisce along with me!

10. British Cinema’s Back Alleys and Byways

a day in the life, british cinema, film, anthony nield,

Written by Anthony Nield this unique top 10 looks at the little-seen side of British cinema.

9. Top 10 Films Set Over One Day / One Night

before sunset, sunrise, one day, one night films,
I’ve always been fascinated by films that take place in a very short space of time. These two lists allowed me to look at some of my favourite films.

8. Top 10 Indian Films of the 2000s

indian cinema, top 10,
Written by Raghav Modi this list highlights the diversity of Indian cinema as well as its growing popularity around the world.

7. Top 10 Scariest Villains in Children’s Films

labyrinth, scary children's films,
Written for Halloween, Top 10 Scariest Villains in Children’s Films was a frightening look back at some truly terrifying kid’s films. No wonder I never slept very well as a child!

6. Top 10 Romantic Films Men Shouldn’t Be Ashamed to Love

when harry met sally, romance films for everyone,
Written by Rory Fish, his tongue-in-cheek top 10 looks at an assortment of great romance films that are perfect for men based on their levels of: Guns, Explosions, Driving Fast and Assorted Violence; Kissing; Sex; Girly Love Talk; and Laugh Out Loud Comedy.

5. Top 10 Films to Restore Your Faith in Journalism

dustin hoffman, all the presiden't men,

Written by Julia Kukiewicz during the height of the phone hacking scandal, her top 10 looks at the positive influence of quality journalism as shown on film.

4. Top 10 Films to have Driven People to Murder

murder, child killers, child's play,

Inspired by the ongoing debate of cinema censorship (and the then recent banning of The Human Centipede 2 in the UK) I took a look at films that, it has been claimed, influenced the notorious crimes of infamous killers. It was an interesting article to write and one, I hope, that was also interesting to read.

3. Top 10 Scariest Films Ever Made

scariest films, horror, texas chainsaw massacre,
Written by Dan Grant, Top 10 Scariest Films Ever Made sparked plenty of debate as to which film really is the most frightening of all.

2. Top 10 Quietly Important Films

audrey hepburn, influential films, greg cwik,

Written by Greg Cwik, Top 10 Quietly Important Films was a comprehensive and wonderfully fascinating look at influential yet little-seen films. Greg’s list was another that sparked a lot of debate here and on Twitter. It received the second highest amount of page views during the year.

1. Top 10 Films to Watch Before Going to Film School

gloria swanson, sunset boulevard,

A list of the great and the influential, this top 10 seemed to strike a chord and went viral, inspiring the site’s biggest single day page views, its most talked about list on Twitter and a host of comments. Unsurprisingly, this was the most viewed page on Top 10 Films in 2011. If there is one list that stands out for me this year it has to be this one. Thanks to everyone who commented and linked to it/tweeted about it.
