Midnight Double Feature #4
Midnight Double Feature #4: Kentucky Fried Movie & Amazon Women on the Moon
It’s Midnight Double Feature time once again. The weekend is here so its time to turn down the lights and indulge in two movies back to back. Tonight it is the turn of two b-movies that both have involvement from John Landis. The first was directed by the Animal House director, the second was produced by and partly directed by the man who gave the world An American Werewolf In London.
1977′s Kentucky Fried Movie and 1987′s Amazon Women on the Moon feature vignette-style narratives where short sketches are intermingled in a loosely connected way. Amazon Women uses someone switching channels on a television as its connecting device, poking fun at late-night TV through faux commercials, movie trailers, clips, talk show segments and public service announcements.
Kentucky Fried Movie is less unified but the far superior of the two. The film was the brain child of the famed Zucker, Zucker, Abrahams team who saw their idea turned down by every major studio who told them it wouldn’t work. Determined to proceed, they found an investor and made the film with John Landis in the director’s chair. The film parodies exploitation films, commercials and educational films made during the 1970s, resulting is some truly hilarious sketches such as the now infamous Fistful of Yen.
