Joaquin Phoenix returns in I’m Still Here

10 September 2010 2 Comments

10th Sep 2010 – Casey Affleck – following in his brother’s footsteps – goes behind the camera for one of 2010′s most unique films. I’m Still Here, Affleck’s directorial debut, is a revealing behind-the-scenes look at troubled actor Joaquin Phoenix’s life following his surprising and sudden retirement from acting in 2008.

Affleck’s camera follows Phoenix around the country as he attempts to gain credibility as a hip-hop artist. Promotion from the studio claims we’re in for a touching, funny and riveting portrait of a enigmatic personality but time will tell if the film is a documentary or a tongue-in-cheek mockumentary. The film is said to include some very strange sequences including a scene in which a disgruntled acquaintance defecates on the actor while he sleeps. Hopefully the film will draw light on Phoenix’s infamous appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman when he appeared incoherent and distant.

The film is released today in the USA. It is released 17th September here in the UK.

Not sure what to make of this one. The whole thing seems mainly like an act, a put-on…even the Letterman appearance…all just an act. Not sure if I want to buy into it. The guy has only been gone for a year…one lousy year.

I’m told that this is actually pretty awful, but the voyeur in me can’t help but be excited to see this window into the downspin of a man’s career/elaborate hoax. (Incidentally, if this isn’t a hoax, I’m also told that the movie becomes much more compelling…)
