Steven Spielberg Week
The 20th June this year marked the 35th anniversary of Jaws. The film, considered the first blockbuster, was financially groundbreaking, saved a Hollywood studio, made Steven Spielberg a household name, and changed the face of American film forever. For Slash Film’s wonderfully pictorial celebration of Jaws take a look here.
So, with it being 35 years since one of my favourite films was made, I thought it was time to celebrate Spielberg’s work from top to bottom. As such, beginning Saturday 11th September Top10Films will become a shrine to Spielberg (for a whole week and two days!).
Throughout the week we’ll be getting alternate takes on his best movies, reliving some of his best scenes, and having a go at pitching a film everyone wants to see (but we’ll keep that under wraps until Monday the 13th!)
In June this year lots of sites started posting celebratory Jaws articles and retrospectives, with people rejoicing their first experience of the film. Have at look at Eavesdropping with Johnny for loads of pics from the movie, Movies With Enduring Influence’s retrospective involving Shampoo, Ground Zeros’ look at the lasting influence of the film (which the Los Angeles Times also look at in their interesting article), while the Film School Rejects wax lyrical about the films virtues, as do the guys at Giant Killer Squid.
Top10Films Steven Spielberg Week starts Saturday 11th September.

Spielberg is one of the most influential directors of all time. I don’t care who loves him, and who doesn’t, the man has changed cinema forever and in so many ways has left his mark on a series of genres. Michael Bay and George Lucas may miff people with their work, but Spielberg has always managed to make movies that entertain with a childlike sense of excitement and adventure, but also have the ability to make movies that emote intense and important stories. He’s been nothing short of a genius and gift to cinema.
I can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store Dan! I’m still working on my own article for the week, and it’s shaping up as yet another controversial one!!!
@Rodney: Excellent Rodney, those are the best ones!
@Heather: Actually, I never warmed to ET as a child which is strange since it’s thought of as a children’s classic. It was only as an adult when I saw it as this nostalgic return to the innocence and sense of wonder and adventure I had as a child, that I started to really love the movie.
Looking forward to this event Dan! Spielberg has been up and down as of late but he has made so many great blockbusters his place as one of the great directors of all-time is assured.
Is it Saturday yet? Dang, I still have a few days to wait!!!!
Great enthusiasm Rodney!
I might need a month with all the stuff I’ve got ready to go for Spielberg week!
